ASP pulley caution....

I tell ya, I just don't think it's worth it for the small amount of hp you get. If I were you I'd switch back to the stock pulleys and belt. I don't think you'll miss the 4hp or whatever it was, lol.

Well I did it! I went back to the stock pulley and belt!!! And here's why...
Ok earlier this week I noticed a "noise"... I pretty much know every rattle and clank the car makes... this was definitely a new one.. I'm getting a noticable clunk clunk clunk when the car is in D or R at idle.... doesn't do it in P or N... just D or R at idle... So I popped the hood... put the parking break on... stuck the car in D and went to the front of the car... DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME! I know not the brightest things to do... I could only imagine the headlines "Man runs himself over in own driveway... He must have been Polish!" LOL!
Anyways... The noise had no distinct point of origin... So I went to the reccommend shop in town... One mechanic said he could hear it very faintly... the other couldn't... It was coming from the front of the car... so I'm thinking alternator, water pump, PS, etc... I'm thinking no way will Ford warrenty any of these with the ASP crank pulley... So I told them to put the stock pulley and belt back on...
I listened for the noise all the way home... probably 10 stop lights... I could no longer hear the noise... Got home and popped the hood... the noise is still there... just not nearly as loud... Ok.. now here is what I'm guessing. Last week I had to put a shorter belt on due to the fact the 86 inch belt was slipping (to long!) The only belt I could find was an 85. It fit on ok and the indicator seemed to show it was ok... BUT I think it was too short causing the tensioner to "bottom" out and make the clunking noise... Does that make sense? Like I said I still have the noise but I can no longer hear it in the drivers seat... so that faint noise could have been there all along... I just never stood in front of my car while it was in Drive! LOL! I do have to take my car to the dealership next week... one of my tranny lines seems to be seeping a bit... hmmm wonder if they'll cover that...
Anyways... I'm now back to stock... so i'm no longer at 200RWHP.. oh, well... I feel better anyways! I drew a line on the tensionor pic showing where the arrow is with the stock pulley/belt...

You'll notice I didn't post onything on my website about the ASP... LOL!

That may or may not have been the problem.. The noise is still there.. That means something is wrong.. You need to find it Scrming! You need to somehow find what it is.. If the noise is still there, I promise it will get worse over time..

I believe it is the tensioner... The 85 inch belt was just too short... While I still can't pin point the clunk clunk clunk seem to match the movement of the tensioner...
I have to take the car in to the dealership on Tuesday... I will definitely point it out to them! I will get to the bottom of the noise... I just feel better now knowing it is most likely the tensioner...

Funny noises scare me.. Please get it checked out.. Sounds like the proper belt size should be apart of the pulley kit!! Everyones always trying to cut corners to save a buck or 2..
Well, let us know what it was! Also, thanks for being the ASP Pulley guinea pig!! Hope no harm comes to the car because of it!

Lets not forget I am still running Doug's ASP UDP on my car, other than the groove problem in the Alt cover that Scrming informed me about, and the subsequent belt change to an 85 inch belt, I have no noises what so ever, all is well in Alabama.......

I'm really hoping it stays that way for you! I understand you feel you picked up more gusto on the street than the dyno shows... I completely understand that... I look at the C&L over my MMR... 3RWHP on the dyno but big difference on the street.. My issue is the claimed results on the dyno were no where near what Doug or I show... i'm guessing the 4RWHP is about it... a far cry from 12 or even the 16 they showed! (Remember the graph and the big RED LETTERS weren't the same! LOL!) Then they don't even both to check if the belt length is right... Now I've got to figure out if I can just touch up my cover or if I just have it repainted... not to mention the money I spent on the WRONG belt... and now the noise.. and while I can't prove the pulley or belt had anything to do with the noise... well... is sure is suspious... Of all the mods i've tried... even the ones where I've replaced later.... (MMR, Magnaflow, etc) This is the one mod I REALLY regret doing! ARGH!

note to self no pulleys until we know what the problem was.

I wouldn't bother with them at all. Small gain, big risk. Not worth it! I had under drive pulleys on my '92 5.0. It made the car run hotter and ruined the alternator one day when my wife was driving it. I took the pulleys off and still ended up changing the alternator like 3 times after the fact. I spent several hundred dollars fixing what the pulleys screwed up. I swore right then and there, never again! I know these new pulleys are different but they are going to cause you problems, as you can see. I pretty much kept my mouth shut during all the pulley threads except the one link I posted saying what a bad idea they were. I know that nobody wants to hear anything negative about the mods they do. But there are plenty of other things you can do that give you real gains and don't cause problems. I'll say it again, don't mess with them at all!

I have the PHP pulley, and have driven it at every rpm and speed possible under 90MPH. And I can tell you I have had no issues what so ever. I would stick with this one, besides its the one we have a independant dyno on thanks to Scrming.
John, I'm suprised you didn't take out the ASP and put your PHP back in. Probably because you wanted the altenator cover painted yellow. LOL. My alternator cover is sitting in my trunk, I'm gonna try to mod it to fit and paint it dark red.

The ASP pulley is a hassle to change... the alt pulley was a lot simpler.... that is the only reason I left the ASP pulley on... guess I should have kept the PHP! LOL!

The only thing that will put this issue to bed is mileage, at this point I have about 4000 miles on the ASP UDP. The only issue was the belt , I thank John for enlightening me on that one. I will continue to run the ASP as long as Doug lets me run it. If I have ANY issues with it I'll post them here. But right now no problems and I'm content with running it , until Doug says otherwise. John let us know what you find out on that noise issue. If it was caused by the pulley I would sure like to know....
