Will Borla Stingers be too Much for a Daily Driver? I'd like to see/hear cruising.

From my experience, the stingers sound like magic from the outside, but inside its not so pleasant. The stinger were like made to just please the people outside the car.

I have had my FRPP Stingers on for about 2K miles now. My car is a daily driver with mostly straight lines for the everyday commute. When I'm not playing around, I'm keeping the engine revving steadily in the 1700 - 1900 rpms range. I drive a grand total of 20 easy miles on work days. If that sounds similar to your situation, here's my opinion if I can help you make up your mind.

Once you set them on and turn the engine on for the first time, you'll have no more no less than a "Holy s***!" moment. It is so much more of a deeper, meaner sound than stock under low revs that you will kick yourself for not having done it sooner. Idling sound has a lot of rumble too, the closest comparison I could make would be a milder version of a Harley Davidson at a stop light. When cold, your car would almost sound cammed. The overall exhaust sound is definitely louder than stock but not leaning towards the obnoxious side due to the deep sound characteristics mentioned above. Now if you really step on it, believe me, they scream like a beast is gonna come out of the tips but of course it's all up to you to make your car sound ****ed. My favorite part is the "burble" sound when decelerating, when cold they even happen to pop... I think this is the coolest thing about these but then again it's just my $0.02.

Now is there drone? YES. Where exactly? 1700 - 1900 rpms. I am not backing up the idea that drone is becoming milder as your Stingers break in, maybe it's right, I have just not experienced it so I would say don't count on it. I believe that your ears might just become used to it. Drone to me is just part of the Mustang's raw and misbehaved heritage as a muscle car. I like the Stingers, their depth, rumble, pop, burble and overall loudness because I want my Mustang to claim its heritage everytime I drive it. Don't get me wrong, you will still be able to listen to the radio, talk on the phone or to someone riding with you. If that is your concern, there are no worries to have about it. But if you want a friendly ride that only sounds "better", then don't get the Stingers aka GT-5... get the GTAs instead. The Stingers don't just change the personality of your car, they change it AND add to it. This addition means more sound and more mess sometimes. This mess will only appeal to someone that wants its muscle car back. Ask yourself whether you want "better" sound or "meaner" sound, if you want to put yourself or your car first, and you'll know whether the Stingers are for you.

I have to add that after two or three days with the Stingers, I barely noticed they were there. Sure, you can hear them, especially under certain conditions of load or idle, but from inside the car with the windows closed, they're not particularly obtrusive. As 'R.A.F.A.L.E.' said, they won't interfere with your ability to listen to the stereo, hold a conversation with a passenger at normal levels...or even talk on the phone (including using the Mobile Ease Bluetooth system).

But they do change the personality of the Stang from moderate to aggressive, and it really makes you feel as though you're almost driving a whole different car.

I would add that the drone is more noticable with windows closed and not so much with them open.

But I agee that the increased sound and even with the drone is nothing that intrudes with conversations or radio, etc.

Go with the Stingers...you will not regret it.

I had my stingers for over a year and I was disappointed with how bad the drone was, I even took them off about two weeks ago and put the stock ones back on and I was just about to put them on ebay and save up for the Corsa's which are supposed to have no drone (but cost around $700) Then I remembered a post from a while back that pointed out that the stingers were prone to leaking if extra effort wasn't applied to getting them to seal at the clamps. I put them back on and found that if the same effort was used on the Borla clamps as the stocks require, the pipes were still loose, I realized that the Borla pipes are bigger than stock. The only way I could get them so seal was with a rubber mallet and a wrench, It took a lot of effort to get them to seal. the posting I remembered recommended using one of those horse shoe looking muffler clamps. Anyway I took it for a test drive and I was shocked at the difference it made. It cut the drone down to what seemed like 75% less.
BIG DIFFERENCE! Now I am so glad I didn't sell them and wished I caught that the first time.

Bottom line: If you have stingers and you think they drone excessively then be sure to check your connections....

There are always a few for sale on the various forums. A used muffler isn't like underwear, doesn't really matter if someone else wore it...



I tried all the different combinations, including the horsehoe clamps and I torqued the crap outta them, I even dremeled off the nub on the stock pipes, but to no avail. Finally had to give them up because I couldn't have a conversation with the windows up. Verts have a lot more drone issue than coupes, I think it's because of the hollow space where the top retracts on each side. If I could have put some styrofoam in there it might have helped...

What kind of clamps do the Borla's come with? Is it the strap type or the round curved bar with a flat clamp?

I think the round kind usually bend up the pipe too much???

Is all of the talk about the drone dealing with an axle back system, or something more involved? How do the Borla axle backs' drone compare the the Bassani race axle back set up?

They are about the same drone, but the borlas are a little deeper tone. I have had both. Borlas are the best, put some gears in and you wont have much drone at all. Good luck
