Ways of measuring air/fuel?
Ways of measuring air/fuel?
I did a seach on this and didn't find anything really helpful or newer than 2005. I put in a Granatelli intake and instead of seeing the slight increase in fuel economy usually associated with CAIs I'm actually seeing a decrease of about 1.5mpg around town and on the highway.
So I know about the autometer guages, but was hoping to keep the interior stock. But just out of curiosity, how well do they work and how do they hook up? I know they come with wideband O2 sensors now, but are there any other inputs?
I've also heard about scan tools that go into the OBD-II port that can tell you engine parameters. Anyone use these? Any models that are better than others? $$$? Would Granatelli's jumper harness that conditions the signal from the MAF throw off the readings?
Are there any other options? Thanks in advance

you have to have a bung welded onto the exhaust somewhere.. my thinking is to turn off one of hte rear o2's and use that one for a wideband o2 sensor if the threads are the same.
Get a wideband from AEM or autometer and mount the gauge in the glove box, then you have it hidden but can look at it if you want.
As for port scanners... they are all pretty much the same until you get into the xcal or predator tuners..
I don't know about the harness from GMS but my guess is that it just changes the signal going to the computer to adjust for the intake... if you take readings at a point after the harness it should read similar to as if it was never plugged in at all.

A good quality gauge and sensor will do the trick. You will have to have a bung installed on your exhaust- it must go before any cats and/or mufflers. The bung will allow you to insert an oxygen sensor that will work in conjunction with the gauge.

I'm assuming a bung is just a tab that just makes the steel thicker so it can be drilled and threaded?
How many O2 sensors are there? 2 upstream and 2 downstream or just 1 of each?
A bung is a threaded insert that is welded into the pipe. The same thing as what the factory oxygen sensors screw into, if that's easier to picture.
There are 3 sensors; one on the drivers side and two on the passenger side. If you keep the factory midpipe, it will have to be removed and the bung installed way up high, infront of one of the cats; then reinstalled.

No, that's alright. I can look under my car sometime this week.
I unfortunately can't weld if I decide to put a bung in, so any idea on cost to have it done?
Anyone know the price on the average scanner?

I paid like $45 to have one installed on my factory pipe last year. You can get a kit and gauge here: http://rpmoutlet.com/aemgauge.htm
There are 4 02 sensors. 2 pre cat and 2 post cat.
ok there is one with a green connector above the cat on the passanger side then there is one with a blue connector under the cat on the passanger and drivers side and there is only 3
here is a link with better pics

Hmmmm... I also thought there is only a total of 3 O2 sensors. 2 on passenger side and 1 on drivers side. I just removed my cats yesterday and got a real good look at both exhaust manifolds ( Thinking Longtubes) and I did not see any O2 sensor on the driver exhaust header. If it's there it is well hid. Mine car is an 05.

I thought the EGR valve was on the driver side manifold?

I'll have to take a look under my car this week sometime, but its sounding like there will be 4 sensors, which makes perfect sense. after all, why would the computer only monitor one bank of cylinders? At only $45, I might just have the bung installed and not deal with unplugging O2 sensors already in use.
