That'll buff right out.... not.

Glad they found the culprit.

I can't quite tell from the picture. Did the piston crack right at the exhaust valve relief? Everyone was postulating (ok, guessing!) that would be a weak spot in the factory piston due to the very short distance to the ring land.

I can't wait to see what the car does after the rebuild. How many pounds of boost are you going to push through your forged bottom end???

Wow, I have had some damage like that but it was with a stock 351w and only after turning in excess of 6000rpm time after time over 2-3 years. May I suggest stay away from stroking, if you were racing every weekend then do it and tear the engine down a couple of times during the summer. As for a street car with occasional track time you would want more reliability and less maintenance than that. Just my opinion.

Update:

Does not look like detonation that caused the engine to blow. Per Steve at Houston Performance, he thinks the piston gave out, the rod snapped, and this torn the block to crap - all from too much heat from 9# of boost.

Bryan... were you running an intercooler?

Yes, 9# of boost with an intercooler.

Car is already at the shop - Houston Performance is doing all the work. The new block should be here Wednesday, along with the 3v heads already re-worked. In theory it will be ready by early next week.

Was it working properly? Any other explanation for the excess heat buildup? Inquiring minds want to know...

HI Byran,
Sorry to see your motor blow. I have seen pistons from a modular motor that looked like that. It was my 96 Cobra that ran fine on 6 lbs of boost by lasted only 2 weeks on 9 lbs. Read the 1st 10 posts of the thread I attached from back in March. There has been alot of debate about what these motors can and cannot take. I still believe about 450 crank HP is about max. These motors have been blowing under boost for almost 10 years. It is nothing new. The ring lands and wrist pin areas of these stock pistons are very fragile. Why do you think Saleen stopped at 400 crank HP. They know the limits of the stock internals. Like I said back in March and I will say it again. If you supercharge one of these engines with over 6 lbs of boost you will be playing with fire and it will be a matter of time before you will get burnt. You are building the kind of motor that should be built for a blower with serious HP. The guys on this thread will debate how much these motors can take for years to come. But until they have this happen to them they will continue to blow up. Best of luck to you on your new motor and I hope others will learn from your bad luck!

I knew at some point this engine would not last, I just hoped it would last longer than it did. And, like you, iut was fine at 6# - but 9# was tooo much.

As for costs, at this time, I will be paying ~8100. This is from the wrecker, to the block, forged items, port and polished heads, new springs to the tune and back home.

Getting the best doesn't come cheap!! I remember the block on my Cobra cost $2000 bucks at time. At that time you could only buy these parts from Ford direct. I did all the work myself and it still costed me $6000.00 in parts. That was 5 years ago. You will have an awesome motor when it's done.

There's a difference between paying for the best and getting taken advantage of. I'm not paying anywhere near that and I'm getting a complete longblock with quite a few upgrades.

David,
Back than there were no choices on where to buy parts for these cars. Now everybody sells them. So now you have to be careful that you know you are really getting top of the line stuff and not something less. Good luck with your new motor.

$300+ towing, $1600 labor, $3500 shortblock, $850 for the port & polished heads, $1200 new block (sotck is broken), etc, etc. You can the completed breakdown at: http://www.mymustangpage.com/2005redgt/page32

You took your enigne out, I barely have 30 minutes free a day from my business to do any work to my car - so the extra labor cost, etc. $1600 is worth it for me.

I thought a shortblock included the actual block...?
