I torqued mine with the car in the air supported by jack stands on the axle. So there was not loading of the bushings with the car on the ground. My second set of bushings have not failed....yet. I just completed my last autocross event of the year.

That qualifies as loading the bushings with the weight of the car as directed in the BMR instructions (and Ford instructions) for any poly or rubber bushings. Only rod ends do not need to be loaded before tightening.

just wondering...what's the worst thing that can happen if you use too little grease or none at all?--just squeakiness or worse?

Well, you want at least a little lube or it will squeak. You could get a little binding, I suppose. Just a little shot will do it. Steeda mentioned possibly removing the grease fitting and just pre-lubing them before selling.
