Stock S-197 Mustang Muffler Modifications.

I actually revised my original configuration. It made it a little louder, but not too loud.
I opened the mufflers up again and removed the pipe that I had added and just left the hole.
So now the mod consists of only a hole cut in the exit pipe (which is from the original mod) and a large hole cut into resonating chamber wall.

You might talk to Glenn - he did the mod too. See if he is still happy with it and get his input.
If you have a plasma cutter to open the mufflers up, it will probably take about 3 hours. That includes fabing the new metal to cover the hole(s) you cut. If you have a roller, it will help curve the new cover to fit the contour of the muffler. That will make it easier to weld up when you are done and it will look nice.
I have another set of stock mufflers I am getting ready to work on now.
I will post pics of Frankenmuffler II as soon as possible...

I used the same cover I cut off the muffler instead of making a new one. I put the stockers back on for a while but ended up putting the frankinmufflers back on. I like them. Cost for ebay mufflers to butcher was around 60bucks delivered.
I used a mig welder. I don't think it would have been as easy using a arc welder.

What did you use to cut the muffler open? And in your opinion, how much louder do you think they are?

i took off my stockers today and cut em open. i also bought some double walled tips to put on in place of the stockers... they were kind of plain in my opinion.
.
i got one muffler cut up and half way welded shut already.... then i will cut the tip off and weld the new one on. hope to be done with one and most the way done with the second one by the end of tomorrow....
i will be driving without mufflers until they are back on... honestly i love the sound without them at all.... just a little too loud during acceleration. honestly my 65 with flowmasters is louder than my 05 with no muffs at all.
it has a good sound to it even without them, i was really surprised.
oh and i used a 4" angle grinder to do all the cutting, and a mig welder to button it all up.

it folded good.... you can tell where i folded it but it is welding shut ok for me.
i usually am a good welder but trying to weld this 2 thin pieces of metal together with a pretty good gap in between is a real pain in the a$$.
i will get some pics of the finished product but it will be ugly.

I used a plasma cutter. I agree on welding up the gap .. it took some time. Mine are louder but not a whole lot louder. Nate you cut a big hole in those, I bet it will be close to no mufflers at all. Just guessing.

i cut quite a bit out, but they are still pretty quiet. the tips i put on are double walled with fiberglass inbetween. its supposed to take out some of the raspiness of an open exhaust. they are definately louder, and i can feel a power difference with the modified mufflers compared to no mufflers at all.
they have a nice low roar to them now and you can hear the burbling sound opon slowing down... i really like it. i wish they were a little louder but i like them for spending only 50 on the tips... it was worth the looks and sound to me.
i will load a little video of the exhaust note after modification.

Well, the second mod which was to remove the baffles is done. Got the covers welded on and went for a test run. It is not really much louder. And in fact, some of the drone is gone now. Doesn't sound bad - just not as loud as I was expecting.
So on to mod 3, and probably the final variation. Connect the inlet directly to the outlet (main) pipe. I will have to fab up an intermediate pipe that will fit in where the baffles were...

That does sound pretty quiet still. Are you still running them? I have been debating on opening mine up some more. Those tip you picked up look like the some ones that are on the bullitt. I wonder if they make it any quietier.....<---is that a werd over the stock tips

Well, I tried one more modification - I completely gutted the inside. It is hollow. Welded some covers on and gave it a run. It actually does not sound bad. A little louder than the previous mod, but not as loud as I was expecting, but deeper. No drone.
