I know I have posted this a couple of hundred times but here goes... again.
Our cars no longer have VSS. It is no longer VSS because the PCM reads the OSS and makes up its own VSS inside of the PCM, so its electronic. You can read it with a scan tool and bring up the VSS pid. But you cant actually tap into it. You want to pick up the signal from the blue with yellow stripe wire in the top plug of the PCM. Same wire you would tap for a GPS speed sensor connection.

One suggestion if possible. Make the light output adjustable for day/night conditions. Nothing worse than a cool mod that you can't see in the bright daylight and so bright at night that it gets in the way .

Well right now the one we built "as a trial" has MPH and speed warning only. It will mount on the top of the dash near the winshield and should tap into the speed sensor or pulse sensor. It would come with the cellophane (spelling?) piece to put on the winshield to display the readings etc.. My plan would be to also include a tach and possibly 1 other user selectable function if we could incorporate it into this unit.. Keep in mind this is not much bigger than a matchbox in size and IF I can pull it off we may be able to sell them for under $200!....
Not cool if we have to put a peel and stick piece on the inside of the windsheild...

every unit on the market is the same way. I don't know exactly what the material is called, but its something like that. Only some factory equipped cars have a section built into the winshield for this type of thing and many others do not.
