Speed Sensor help needed for HUD display

Does anybody know where the speed sensor is on our cars?. I figure it may be behind the dash cluster but I thought I would check first before tearing into it.. Figured some of you may have done Navigation systems and maybe tapped into this or something?.. We at B&M have developed a prototype "Heads up Display" or HUD and I want to be the guinea pig for this unit in my car. But, before the engineering staff works on the car to look for the sensor , i thought maybe some of the members could shed some light on where this might be?.....Thanks, Chris

I'm pretty sure the sensor is still connected to the transmission. I think you can data log the speed sensor through the OBDII

Attached is all i could find
of course there's the Wheel speed sensors, but these read individual wheel speeds.

i think the cleanest approach is to log the VEHICLE_SPEED PID via the OBD-II interface.. not sure how practical that would be though

Well right now the one we built "as a trial" has MPH and speed warning only. It will mount on the top of the dash near the winshield and should tap into the speed sensor or pulse sensor. It would come with the cellophane (spelling?) piece to put on the winshield to display the readings etc.. My plan would be to also include a tach and possibly 1 other user selectable function if we could incorporate it into this unit.. Keep in mind this is not much bigger than a matchbox in size and IF I can pull it off we may be able to sell them for under $200!....

Settings I'd think would be cool

three different display pictures/settings
1. Speed
2. Tach
3. combination of whats already on the consol just projected onto the window.. (tach on left, speed on right, oil pressure, voltmeter etc..) A graphical representation of the instrument cluster as we have it now.

not sure how easy number 3 is but it would be cool

I can only get 2 maybe 3 functions into the unit.Otherwise it would not be cost effective and affordable for the masses...A shift light could possibly be incorporated.

I remember back when i had an import that there was a company Defi i think, and they made a heads up display for imports... you might want to see if B&M can get one of those to get an idea... i dont know how good it works becuase i didnt see the need at the time.

Speed, tach and shift light sounds great.

I'd love to see a customizable display, and the ability to select inputs from different sources -- of course, that'd be a bit expensive I'd think.

Yes, I am familiar with Defi; they are still in business producing their unit. It sells in the neighborhood of $350ish from what I have seen and they really don't market it much..Obviously we would highly publicize this if we release it and pricing should be fantastic..

I know I have posted this a couple of hundred times but here goes... again.

Our cars no longer have VSS. It is no longer VSS because the PCM reads the OSS and makes up its own VSS inside of the PCM, so its electronic. You can read it with a scan tool and bring up the VSS pid. But you cant actually tap into it. You want to pick up the signal from the blue with yellow stripe wire in the top plug of the PCM. Same wire you would tap for a GPS speed sensor connection.
