Is anyone using any of the Royal Purple products? I have heard and read good things about them. I am currently using the differential and transmision fluid in my bmw. Let me know what you guys think.

i've used royal purple (engine oil) in my car after switching over from redline synthetics. i just found it cheaper, that's all. i didn't notice any difference ibetween the two performance-wise. my car ('88 5.0 lx) had over 150,000 miles on it when i got it and the oil pressure would gradually drop over time, however when i switched to "true" synthetics (redline / royal purple) the oil pressure would stay constant between oil change intervals. these products also have a different feel and smell to them - i did my own oil changes. i for one, would recommend using royal purple. you'll even pick up a few horsepower. of course, it all depends on your personal preference. i for one, am a believer in synthetics. i say go for it once you've put some miles on your car. btw, royal purple really IS purple... and no, redline is NOT red. just thought i'd add my .02 cents

I've heard this in the past but never used synthetics. Considering it with my new Mustang. What I'm wondering is what is to early? How many miles should I go before changing? Suggestions appreciated.

Our 1st change was at 500 with Dino oil.
2nd at 1,000; again with dino.
3rd was ay 5000 and shifted to Mobile 1.
Maintenance schedule is to now change at 6-9K
Same as on my last several drivers; one of those we put over 500,000. What has worked for me for years.

From what I understand you can go as much as 10 to 11k on a good synthetic provided your vehicle is not exposed to harsh operating conditions (I think only a vehicle mostly driven on the highway and at a good amount of time at operating temperature really qualifies). with a change in filter every 3k and top off the oil unitl you hit 10 or 11k and time to change.

went to mobil 1 synthetic yesterday at 2,145 miles with mobil 1 top O line oil filter----guys at the oil shop were great----$69 normally $80 with that oil filter---i will change every 5-7K----

i look at it this way---every 5-7K---instead of every 2-3 K with normal oil---i would just do it myself however---i live in a condo complex that is not too conducive to it and there is very little clearance to do so without putting the car up on stands---plus, come end of october its a tad chilly out---

I changed to Synthetic (Mobil 1) after 500 miles. I have Royal Purple in the trans. I still change oil every 3000. I do it myself and it costs under 40.00 bucks. I drive in extreme heat. Its worth the extra cost to me.

I'm just a mechanic from the Harley world, so this is somewhat apples to oranges. However you guys changing synthetics every 3k miles might want to think again. It's been my experience guys who go to synthetics and don't go longer intervals between changes are the guys who have problems. People don't realize oil doesn't just lubricate it also carries out the "trash" of the motor. And it doesn't absorb the "trash" very well until it starts to break down. So what ever oil you're using make sure it's starting to look dirty before you change it. It's been my experience that good conventional oils can take up to 5000 miles in good conditions to begin to break down. In fact that's Ford's own recommendation.
So far I have yet to be convinced of the whole sythetic movement. I'm not saying you should avoid synthetics either. IMO they are just an alternative and are best for fleet vehicles so the mechanics don't have to do as much regular maintenence. I also don't think the price is worth the benefit as I know guys with as many as 200k miles on an air cooled Harley and only use HD 20w50. Just food for thought.
