I have an 06 GT and today while in reverse the car seemed to loose power like sputtering. I was suprised so I tried it again and same thing. Is this some sort of built in safety feature?
P.S the car is an automatic

 

No clue, but it wouldn't suprise me if it was a safety thing.

 

There is a factory torque limiter for the manual transmission GTs that limits the torque in reverse to about 1/6 that of the other gears (and no, there is no torque limiter for 1st - 5th as far as I can tell).

 

In cse you were wondering how that applies to an automatic transmission... the cars with automatics will have a torque limiter setting in the calibration. Chances are the reverse gear has a similar limiter.

 

I'm sure its there so Ford wont have to deal with as much idiots breaking their cars by doing stupid things.

 

I believe the autos have a torque limiter in 1st gear as well, it seemed that way the one time I drove an 05 auto GT. 1st gear was strong, but when it hit 2nd, it seemed like the engine really took off...like as if I wasn't really flooring it in first, and gave it some more gas in 2nd. Kind of strange, but I guess it could have been the traction control. I don't know.

 

Yes, auto's have a torque reduction feature in reverse, this is the only one I DONT mess with. Truly, I knew this would eventually come up but for the past two years have been watching. hahahaa...

I looked at the E-250's 4R70W torque limiter and it seems Ford uses a limiter for all 4 forward gears as well as reverse. However in the Crown Vic's stock calibration, the 4R70W does not have any limiters other than in reverse. The Stang with a manual trans only has a limiter for reverse.

 

You mean you can't go super fast in reverse like Ricky Bobby?
