I just did a couple of changes to my Poor Mans CAI. Its not real pretty, but it works until I can decide who makes the best after market kit. I will keep my new fresh air source. This mod does make a difference in HP & MPG.

Went digging through my goodie shelf & found 2" ducting hose, NACA duct, & some aluminum sheet metal.

Made a heat shield. Ducted fresh air from the lower valance, up & through the ABS area. It is tight & you have to make the round tube oblong to get it past the ABS. You will see the shield, duct, & duct tube in pics.

They're high pitched "whistles" that deer are supposed to be able to hear so they don't run in front of your car.

some of us call deer "rural rats", only difference from the urban variety is that when you hit one, (or one or more hit you (honest, actually happened to me)) your Mustang becomes another expensive accident statistic.

There is continuing debate about the effectiveness of "deer whistles" on cars. There may be evidence that they actually attract some "genetically doomed" deer.

I doubt you see any gains, the tube is so small and wrap all over the place. I tried it myself and gave up. The best place to "ram" air in the the drive side headlight -but is is going to remove that for street use If we could get a 3" or 4" tube with some straight runs. there might be a chance - but I hope I am wrong and you see results.

Hi Bryan

The factory slot is very small & not directed very well from the front. My duct is facing directly into the air path & a 2" hose can carry a fair amount of air. But as you say a 3-4" would be sweet.

With my foglamp conversion I do have 4 low beams & 4 high beams. I have plenty of light. I am tempted to pull the headlamp & see what could be made.

I am also going to close up the area around the filter & my feed & the factory feed so the loss of cool air will be minimal.

Hi Bryan, Thanks for asking.

Myself & others love the mufflers delete. I did it on a whim because I really liked the 4" tips the shop was able to get for me. So besides the looks I also have the sound. The car definitely pulls stronger with the CAI & exhaust.

The car sounds like an older muscle car with headers. I want to either make an audio or video of the car. Any tips on how to post to the net. I also have a laptop if that helps.

I also made the template to enclose my CAI. With some luck I will update this post later in the week.

BTW Nice article about you & the car at All Ford Mustang site.

How do you like the new shift points that you programed?

At what RPM's is your max HP & torque?

Shift points are perfect for the 4:10 gears To tell you the truth, the Tuner does not take the car much past 5700 RPM during the dyno test.

Howver, I am planning to meet up wiht him again, to do a complete and **** retentative complete tune.

I hope he can sqeez out anothe r10 hp and bring my torque up.

Once this is all done, I should be exactley where I want to be - until a SC or Turbo comes out.

As promised here is a pic of the finished Poor Mans CAI project.

Just a recap:

Eliminate the OE box.
Wire tie the air filter to the top lid
Secure the lid to body
Heat shield the OE lid with aluminum along engine side.
Pick up fresh air from front valance & route through the ABS area.
Seal area around box with rubber mat so as to keep loss of air from OE & second feed to a minimum.
Also block the area with the mat facing the radiator to keep warm air out.

Hey PONY XPRESS, can you take some pics of how you ran the tube (top bottom, etc). I think I am going to follow in your foot steps and run some too Also, nice area about the "rubber mat" to help enclose it.

The Deer alert package has dyno graphs showing at least a 25rwhp gain.

Would Bambi lie to you?

Hey Bryan

To take good pics I would have to jack it up & I won't be able to do that for a while. But let me try to talk you through it.

First there is very little room behind the grill for the duct. I happened to have a small NACA duct which worked great. You can do it without the duct & just have the tube facing outwards. Or try some other duct. I used 2" racing tube about 3-4' long.

The tube follows the grill & then makes a turn up towards the slot next to the ABS block. My tube is wire reinforced so I had to make the end coming through the slot oblong so it would fit. It is tight & needs persuasion. I was then able to open most of the tube back up.

Once you have the tube where you want it wire tie everything down.

It may help if you feed some wire or smaller hose through the top so you can see the path you need to run the final hose.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you do need the pics.

Today was the first day I ran it with the unit enclosed & my exhaust on the highway sounds just a little bit deeper. I called on a ricer turner today & he loves the Stang & the mods I did. He may give me a free dyno if we can work out our schedules.
