Personalized Plates in California

I just ordered custom plates.. "BAD S197" but don't know how that works when they re-register the car.

I don't know how they do it since the car is only 3 months old and I've already paid till next year that time (of purchase). I assume I just pay the extra chunk for the custom plate - 3 months of not having the custom plate?

Does anyone know for sure?

thanks
jake

I've had my personalized plate for years. When I sold my Maxima, i took off my plates (and registration was due anyway). I had to pay $25 'retention fee' (so DMV would not put my plates back into the pool), then had to pay another $25 one month later to assign them to my 2006GT. the reason for the 1 month delay, is that I had to wait for the new standard plates to arrive, then took all 4 plates to DMV (to surrender the new std plates and re-assign my personal plates to the S197). On top of all this, I had to pay the 10/2006 to 10/2007 Registration Fee (the one you pay at the dealer when you bought the car).

if your tags are current you should only pay for the new style tag, not the registration

You'll just have to pay the additional costs for the custom plate. You will NOT have to pay registration twice.

BTW....You're gonna get sick of explaining what S197 means! Trust me!

Now I just tell people it stands for "Supercharged 197 mph GT"
