I saw that, and was amazed. Is that what the supercharger kits are capable of with some tuning. If so, that's quite impressive.

I wonder if they'll tell us how long that motor lasts at 500+ rwhp... not long I bet.

Part of the problem is that all of these numbers (for almost all SC companies) are obtained between 6400-6800rpm. I'm still at a loss as to why anybody thinks these motors will handle this RPM. I commented before that so far, only Saleen and Whipple have not driven the motors into the stratosphere to make their power. Both of these companies will tell you that you cannot rev the stock shortblocks this high. Over the factory rev limiter, you will have value float and the internal forces on the rotating assembly are beyond their design spec. Add a crappy tune and you are finished. How could the engine be expected to last? Wind a stock 03-04 Cobra to 7500rpm with a crap tune and you will blow it up too.
Keep the revs under the limit and get a (good) custom tune.
I have no qualms about putting a charger on my stock shortblock car, but it won't be a Vortech. The torque of the KB or Whipple will really be beneficial when dealing with cars this heavy.

Good point, I didn't even notice that when I read the article. No wonder engines are blowing.

Don't get me wrong, Vortech has always made very good hardware, thats not the problem. Even in Vortech's own advertising like on page 76 of the new MM&FF which is a widely distributed ad, they quote power numbers at 6500rpm. ATI is also doing the same thing in the new issue of 5.0, 511hp at 6750rpm. All the KB numbers I've seen are over the stock rev limit at 6400rpm and greater. This is nonsense, the engine is in valve float soon after factory redline. I blame some of this on the magazines which are only out to impress their readers at any cost.
The other worrisome article was in the new MM&FF, where the motor was going dangerously lean before 6k, I know that they used the SCT tuner instead of the bundled predator. I would hope that with the canned predator tune that a safe A/F ratio is held. The poor guy bolting on a blower in his driveway and flashing the computer thinks he is in great shape and that a custom tune is only an option. In the case of this article, the option is to further upgrade the fuel system or wreck the motor.
Lastly, Whipple has made 522rwhp and 550ft/lb torque at 10psi without headers, on pump gas, stock fuel rails, and no stops at the ice chest, had to pass all of Ford's durability testing, and is the same blower as used on the Ford GT.

The Vortech link a few posts ago shows a story where the peak power came at 5700rpms. So I guess all is not in vain.
