It's really not too bad. The worse is the wiring harness. I'll be getting the motor back ready to drop in. I took out the motor and stripped everything off down to the shortblock. I replaced all the bolts back on the stock block for reference when the new one arrives.
Boss 330 (Al) is a super nice guy. He had about 10 motors or so on stands in the works. VERY knowledgeable. I learned so much today. He spent the time to answer any question I had...which was a lot. I met him in Kentucky at the NMRA finals. He was delivering 2 motors to some racer's. Come to find out he's about an hour North of me. A buddy of mine turned me onto Al. My buddy is getting some sick 5.4L 4V built by Al right now as well. Al does put some trick motors together.

David,
Tell me what I'm seeing in post 11? Is the top of that piston pitted? or is that just something that got on the pistons while tearing it down?

Sorry to see all that damage....But knowing you it will be better then ever shortly. keep us posted on your progress.

That's the top of the piston in the cylinder. That's the way it looks, but there may have been a bit of water in there. Even though I drained the water, there was about 1/2 a gallon still in the heads. I'll go check and see if it's pitted or not.

Wow thinking about having to rip apart the engine on a brand new car makes me afraid of the track. Best of luck to you, can't wait to see your new times.

What if the ground strap of 8 plugs look to be melted off?

What should the compression read when performing that compression test?

I was wondering who would be the first of these boards to pull and build up an engine. I think you will be beating us into the water box pretty soon.

How much money do you anticipate going into this new motor? Also, when you refer to Windsor, are you refering to the 351 (5.8l) iron platform and ditching the 281 3v?

From your experience now what do you suggest to the rest of us? Stay away from a true slick to avoid breaking so many parts...Build up chassis support...what?

I think we would like some details...

It's a 4.6 Windsor-truck block. Everything bolts up the same.
Have either a anti-roll bar or sway bar on the car if you go to a true slick.

Wow!! So sorry to see your problems. Your photo are terrific. We have all been wondering what the motor looks like inside. Very interesting. I knew that top ring was close but actually seeing it is another matter. I see a lot of $$ here. If I ever have to go through all this I would look at a Crammer for sure but then I would have auto problems. You are fortunate to hook up with that motor builder in BG. It sure pays to network and talk to all you can. Did he have a display there at BG? I wanted to go but health was not doing too well at that time. Sorry I did not.

Al Pappito is the builder and no, he didn't have a display. He was referred to me from a buddy in Ohio. Gave me his number and hooked up with him in BG. Funny thing is that his shop is about an hour North of me. So, once I learned of him, I started poking around. I haven't heard one single negative thing about him. Everyone has had the utmost compliments for him!
I took my heads and parts to his shop. I spent about 3 hrs there just soaking up info. Super knowledgeable! It's been awhile since someone has taken the time to go into depth on any subject I mention. Very nice guy and very easy going!

I use to love to visit top motor heads in my era as I could learn so much from them. I just talked to a guy this week that is a real dedicated gear head and has a school for performance mechanics. Up to date on all the latest computer tuning and has one of those load dynos. He does loads of diesel performance mods on the side. This was one smart duede.

I will get it tuned by a local fella after the motor gets back in. I'm still unsure of the tuner I'll use in Dec.

What I learned today.

4. If you burn off the tip of your spark plug, you should have a leak down and compression check. Very good chances that the little piece that broke off will work it's way into the exhaust valve or burn a trail and grenade the motor. Not immediately, but eventually.
That's been my concern with all these carnaged plugs showing up . . .

Glad you're taking this thing in stride!

Sorry if I am missing it here, but why do you THINK it happened? There are lots of cracks in that block, and lot of them seem to be at exterior locations [connection to the trans, etc.]... So the bellhousing broke at the same time as all the rest of this?

Why? Insufficient fuel and a chain-reaction from there? Or more than one thing at once?

There is no known internal damage to the block. 169Stang has posted several times what happened, please read through the first page of posts to find out what happened.

I've talked with quite a few people about it. No one had a solid answer. After continueing my quest to understand EXACTLY what caused the cracks and after realizing that the output shaft on the tranny was bent due to the driveshaft....The bent output shaft caused a vibration and the vibration continued to get worse over the course of a week. So, the best educated guess is either the cracks were caused by the driveshaft giving way initially or the vibration caused the cracks thru the course of the week. fatigue cracks. So, I installed the Carbon fiber driveshaft and the vibration was still there. I had the gears re-set and the vibration was still there. And when I say vibration, I don't mean like a tire has lost its shape or belt. I mean something you feel in you azz.
NO internal damage at all, just cracks. The other thing is that you can't just replace the bellhousing. it's apart of the tranny casing. Darnit...so I have to put in a better tranny.
