JLT WIthout a Heat Shield

Hello,

Over the weekend I installed the JLT Intake. But the Heat Shield is the biggest POS ever!

It does not fit correctly. No matter how I adjust the Intake it just won't fit all together correctly. It either pushes to hard against the Brake lines or crushes up against the hood.

So I decided the hell with it. The Intake doesn't seem too move very much without the shield holding it up anyways and I thought maybe some of you guys decided to not use the shield also.

For those who chose not to use it have you had any problems?

I had my JLT installed my Doug at bamachips. There is no heat shield on mine and it is working fine and I haven't noticed any issues with it at all. I wouldn't worry about it. I doubt the heat shield really does that much anyway.

Hmm.. mine fit rather fine, although it rubbed against my CS6 hood, so i filed it down a bit.

i couldn't imagine installing the JLT without the heat sheild, simply because it didn't feel right having the weight of the MAF Port and Filter only supported by the rubber elbow on the throttle body, especially on a bumpy ride :S

How is it possible that your heat shield hits the hood before the filter itself does? The heat shield sits lower than the filter.

I ran my JLT kit without the heat shield for several months with no problem. I did install the shield later with no problems either, and even later modified it to accept the CDC shaker kit. I had no problems what-so-ever with either of the pieces.

Yes I know, the car is much more dirty in this picture than normal:

If you look at this picture you can see that the shield pushes up against the brake lines coming out of ABS control box. I think this is bad because the CAI actually has just a little bit of movement as you use rev the engine.

I think it is a very bad idea for anything that moves rubbing up or pushing against the brake lines. In my case it is really pushing pretty hard. Enough to push the brake line to a wierd angle.

Perhaps my shield is a little distorted I'm not sure. But every picture of the Heat Shield I see seems to look the same. Rubbing the brake lines or the hood. The more you try and position the CAI downwards to avoid pushing the hood the more it pushes the wall at the brake lines harder.

I'm telling you guys, I must have tried to position this thing more then 20 times and it DON'T FIT. I suggest for those of you that think your does fit you may want to take another look.

Does anybody know if the MMR shield was actually designed to fit this car correctly or is it another "15 second idea".

I suggest that you try it again... Mine fits perfectly. I would agree that your CAI will work without it, but it will definitely help. I previously owned a GMS set-up prior to the JLT and the aluminum air tube got so hot you could not touch it. I immediately noticed that the JLT does not get nearly as hot. My example only goes to show how much heat is generated under the hood. Every little bit helps.

Are you sure that the elbow is connceted to the throttle body correctly? Some people have reported that they've installed it backwards/upside down. The long part of the tube should connect to the air tube and the short end to the throttle body. Also, make sure everything is attached before tightening. The rubber part of the filter, where attached to aluminum MAF reciever, should rest on the heat shield with its own weight. Finally, my heat shield does not rub on the brake lines, but against a nut attaching the line to the cylinder. If you cannot remedy the rubbing issues, then wrap the line with electrical tape or a piece of rubber hose cut length-wise.

Someone mentioned that the heat shield rubs the hood . I don't know how that is possible. The actual filter sticks up much higher than the shield. My ONLY issue with fitment was that the tip of the filter slightly touched the hood. The area where it rubbed some of the paint away I just place a piece of self-adhesive felt(that you can purchase anywhere) and I have absolutely no issues what-so-ever. I know that this is long. If this doesn't make sense, PM me and I'll walk you through it. I do recommend that you use the heat shield for maximum performance gains. You'll love the set-up, I know that I do...

check the picture tom281 posted after yours, you can see the right edge of the heatshield sitting up higher than the cone shaped filter..
that's the edge i had to shave off to clear my shelby CS6 hood

Okay,

I see what your talking about. Your hood is probably a little bit different since it is not the factory hood.

Glad yours fits well.

strange
check the attached photo.. my heatshield didn't touch any of the ABS brake lines.. it was merely resting on the box with at least 3mm clearance fromt the closest line

Absolutely.

In my install I made sure the longer side of the elbow is positioned toward the JLT pipe.

Also, the molded numbers in the rubber elbow are on the bottom side.

Thanks for your help. I appreciate the time you took.

I now see what you're saying , but Tungs shouldn't have this problem.

That's how mine is as well... not touching the brake lines and resting on the "box" against the nut. FYI- I think that they're made of some type of metal, and not ABS, as I had to slightly bend them inwards to accommodate the GMS filter as they they rubbed the actual filter itself

Mine first rubbed up against the brake line too. I thought this wasn't right so I readjusted it and now it sits fine.
