Brands of oil to use

I'm going to start changing my own oil because I'm tired of having technicians overfilling it. The Walmart near me has the following brands of synthetic blend oil at good prices because you can buy a 5 quart container and a single extra quart. The brands are Valvoline, Castrol, Quaker State, and Havoline. Now my question is which brand out of these is the one that is the best for my 05 GT? I'll also get a Fram filter. Thanks for the info and opinions. The last time I got my oil changed at my dealer, they overfilled it by almost two quarts. I found out later in the day when I went out to the garage and checked the oil. I had to drive back to the dealer (11 miles one way) to have them drain out the excess oil.

I choose none of thee above. My choice is Mobil1.
You will here mostly Mobil1 & Royal Purple from people on this board.
I hear a lot of people don't like the Fram Filters either.
I use Mobil1 there too.

Stay away from Fram...they used to be good but are not nearly as good as what they were years ago. The Motorcraft filters are good and good price. If you can find them, the Mobil1 synthetic media filters are probably the best out there, but they are a little more $$.

Also, +1 on the Mobil1 oil!!

Mobil 1 or Royal Purple. For filter go K&N Gold or Ford Racing. I'm sure the Mobil 1 filter is good also. This is the life blood of your car. Don't be cheap!! And yes, Fram is crap.

Don't use K&N, you will mostly be paying for marketing instead of performance. Just compare the filtering capabilities of the various brands. Purolater (Gold) or Motorcraft work really well for me. I've used Mobil 1 filters in the past but decided to stop paying the extra coin for no real reason.

I always use Mobil 1 for oil.

Read this Oil Filter Study:

http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilterstudy.html

and its conclusions:

http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilters.html

After reading this, I use Motorcraft.

As far as oil goes, I use Castrol synthetic blend but I will switch to Mobile 1 synthetic soon.

Good thing I've always used PureOne and Motorcraft...
Used Mobile oil on the old car and now Mobile 1 synthetic in the stang. never had any problems.
Well, used to use Fram in my first car, and I can say they are complete fecal matter. Instantly (after 1000 miles) saw the difference between the regular Fram and the Tough Guard, and even more so with the PureOne.

Thanks all. Yeah I read about the Fram so I won't get that filter. I'm probably going with the Purolator Pure One filter and Mobilclean 7500 synthetic blend oil. This website is very helpfull.

Can't go wrong with Amsoil, Mobil 1, or Royal Purple.

Why should I stop using K&N?

Read the links posted by 1 SG and read the filter's box for all of the filtering abilities (Pay attention to Single Pass Filtering ability, SPF). I'm not saying the K&N is a POS, just that there are filters available, that will do the job just as well (if not better)at a substantially lower price. The K&N IS built like a tank, so if you go to the track a lot you may want to stick with it.
I'm not slamming anybody for buying one. I have in the past. But then I started paying attention to what I was getting for my money and decided that the K&N was more marketing than real performance.

Nice article, but I think the study may be a little dated now. The Mobil 1 Extended Service filter is even better (more surface area in the same container), and its even cheaper than an ultra conservative 6000 mile change out schedule of the Mobil 1 some owners are using.

Motorcraft oil filter
Mobil 1 whatever grade
Pennzoil Platinum whatever grade
or Motorcraft 5W-20 until the warranty is up

Mobil 1 and FRPP oil filters are nice, but a waste of money and do not offer any significant added value over a Motorcraft filter. A high flow filter simply means reduced filtration efficiency, just like the K&N conical air filters. You let in more junk in the engine and it doesn't filter out the particles (if any) as well as a better filter.

I plan to stay with the stock airbox and filter unless someone else develops a larger airbox + larger MAF for the 05-up GT. I refuse to use cotton gauze/foam filters.

I've always used Castrol synthetics or Mobil 1 and Wix oil filters. Never had any probs with either. Air filters will depend on what CAI I put on the car. but every other vehicle I've had, I've always replaced with a K&N.

US Castrol Syntec is Group III (dino oil) and the only Group IV Syntec in the US is the German Castrol 0W-30 (Says Made in Germany on the back of the bottle).

A "true" synthetic engine oil uses Group IV or Group V basestocks. Mobil 1, Redline, Royal Purple, Amsoil, Pennzoil Platinum (Group V), and German Castrol 0W-30 are such synthetics.
