Thumbs up

The hydrocarbon filter everyone is talking about?
Is it suposed to make your car sound louder without it?
What is the purpose of it anyways? Does it matter if you remove it?

HELP ME>>>>>>>>>I feel out of the loop>>>>>>>>> :bang:

It is supposed to help with emissions by catching hydrocarbons which "may" be hurting the ozone.

I think the idea is that it will free up air flow to the engine, I haven't heard that it makes the car any louder or less loud.

It also helps gas mileage, horse power (anywhere from 2-8HP I've heard) and I think sound, maybe...

According to some, the latest builds don't have them anymore.

"It's behind the air filter. Take a pair of needle-nose pliers and slowly work the the thing out. Very easy. The 05s have been running rich from the factory so just removing the trap shouldn't cause any problems. However removing the trap along with changing the filter might lean it out enough to be an issue as SixtySix pointed out. "

definately did not make my car louder and I am not sure how it possibly could. Anyway, there are posts in here somewhere but it is simple. Remove the clamp at the air filter. Bend the hose back and look in the end of the hose. You will see a filter in there made out of metal. Using pliers and a flat screw driver slowly work it out of the hose. It is held in place by a small lip, but should only take you a few minutes to remove it. My gas mileage increase a bit, and some have posted dyno results to show a small hp gain

Like adrenalin just posted - small MPG increase along with some reports of a small HP increase. Some of the newer cars are being delivered without one so it can't be that important. I pulled mine out about a week ago (but I don't drive the car that much) and I'll keep an eye on my mileage for a while to see if increases. No noticable difference in sound tho.

I thought there was an issue of fuel mixtures being thrown off by the computer after removing the filter b/c it is so sensitive? Not immediately, but within like 100 miles or so? I thought you had to wait until you could use a programmer? Please advise b/c this is why I did not remove the filter.

Any hp increase is good, especially for free

As far as I know that is not correct. When you remove the trap you might want to disconnect the battery for 5 minutes. That will reset the computer. You should not have any fuel mixture issues. I drove my car without it for over 1,000 miles before receiving my mmr intake and SCT Xcalibrator.

There was another thread on this; sometime around the build week of April 11th they quit installing the HC trap at the factory. Mine was built on April 29th; doesn't have it.

I just removed mine after reading this article, only took about 2 minutes. I also have a K&N filter, has anyone seen any adverse effects from removing the trap?

Thanks

Remember though that one magazine, either Hot Rod or Popular Hot Rodding, took the thing off and actually noticed a DECREASE of a couple hp on the dyno. So, without a tune to go with it, the trap removal might be overrated.

I removed it and replaced the filter with a K&N drop-in. I haven't noticed any difference in the gas mileage, but the down rev "gargles" more through the exhaust. Also, the throttle response isn't as good, not dramatically, but a little more hesitant. Hopefully, my SCT flash tonight will resolve that. I've been running her this way for about 1000 miles and haven't seen any adverse affects.

a hydrocarbon trap is for trapping unburnt hydrocarbons when You shut off the car. When you restart the car - the HC trap is a precatalytic system and as the car warms up slowly releases the unburnt hydrocarbons back into the engine to be burned.
You cant fail an emissions test because of this it only takes affect when shutting down the car and when you just start it. You are running the car when you do an emissions test. Anyway Its new technology that has only been used in the last few years.
By removing the HC trap Your airflow will increase but its so slight the computer will adjust, and its funny how the HP increase has been distorted - it was originally reported to be 2-5 rwhp at the most. If you unhook the battery and follow the instructions on page 205 (or near there) of your owners manual - the car will adjust quickly.

K&N filter and removed Hc trap - my original set up - caused no issues.
With MY SLPs installed and removing the HC trap, it increase exhaust volume very slightly while cold. With the C&L intake - there is no HC trap and no issues. I have put 4000 miles on my car without it.
