Has anyone else heard this sound?

Has anyone else heard a sound from the engine compartment that sounds like a plastic fitting is loose. I've heard since the day I picked up the car. It's very faint but I know its there and it has to go. On the way home from work last night, I was on the highway, dropped it down to 4th and gassed it (about 4000 rpm) to get around a slow moving truck and it became much louder. I thought it might be a heat shield that is vibrating but I'm not sure. I poked my head into the engine compartment but didn't see anything that appeared to be out of place. I know thats a pretty vague description but that is the best I can do after the beer I've had.

Cheers,
Jon

Did you find out what the noise was yet? I think i know exactly the noise you are hearing, i don't know what it is, but like you... i have had this annoying rattling vibration noise as well since day 1!! I have not as of yet taken mine in, but i eventually will as it sounds terrible. When the air or defogs are on it's worse, but even with them off it does come and go......

I had a vibration somewhere in my dash on Saturday and no amount of slapping the dash could make it go away. Today when I drove to work I didn't hear it. I read the TSB on the center stack area vibration and will monitor it if it comes back. Just a noisy little vibration that is annoying. I've had the car for a year and this is the first time I heard it.

I get what sounds like a dash rattle and I found that it is actually the shifter boot rubbing together. may want to try holding the boot next time you hear the dash rattle.

Well, whatever this is can be heard from outside the car as well.... It can be faint and can be quite loud.... i just got back from a ride to listen closely and notice it only does this when at idol and usually the breaks applied..... especially when sitting still (in drive or course) I have an automatic... I have been reading threads about rattles and know about the dash foam fixes etc, but i am just about possitive it is nothing like that. The car is quiet while driving, however down to idol and brakes and she starts rattling like it's under load, almost sounds like a belt flapping or a shroud flapping, its anoying to say the least. I know it can be heard well out of the car, because when i got home from a drive one day, my son and his freinds were out in the driveway playing b-ball..... his comment when we got inside was, "man that thing looked sweet when you pulled up, but boy do you need to fix that noise!!" Help!! I am really not wanting to take it to the dealer, especially after friday, when the supercharger goes on (x-charger) i guess i am kind of hoping the SC install may make this disapear, seeing we have to install and reroute a new belt..... What do you guys think?????

It is the inner shifter boot! I've tried using zip ties and/or a small hose clamp to get rid of that annoying sound. Zip ties didn't help, the small hose clamp helped a little bit but the vibration is still there. Any suggestions? Your help would be greatly appreciated as its driving me nucking futs!

I just started getting the "loose plastic" sound and assumed it was my pie adapter under there vibrating.. but now it might not be.

I dont think it's the shifter inner boot as it's rubber.... chalk it up to dash rattle?

Tehre was a TSB on dash rattles near and behind the console... might want to check that out.

I'll have to look saturday when i tear the console apart to find the source.

I hear it too but only when the clutch is out. If I pull the clutch in, the sound goes away. Hopefully it isn't the throw out bearings or something worse.

A defective throw out bearing normally makes noise when the clutch pedal is depressed, since that is when the bearing is carrying a load.
What you're hearing is probably the same noise I hear when the clutch in my S197 is released in neutral -> normal clutch disk and tranny rotational noise.

That lifter tapping is scaring the crap out of me. The dealership "couldn't reproduce the issue" when I finally had the time to take it in....even though I told them exactly how to reproduce it (let the car get to normal operating temp, and wait). I got fed up with their excuses, and just told them to give me back my car after them having it for 3 days. I need to find the time to take it to another dealership.
