H&R Coil Overs

While researching this topic, I found a lot of false information and a lot of people looking at this as a "rice" mod. As usual with what I do I'm here to prove the nay say'ers wrong. I recently had a shot at a used set up from a friend of mines car, it was an H&R Street/Strip kit.

The major advantage in my eyes was not only the deal I got on them, but the adjust ability. I've been playing with some auto X and I really hate that my current set up (Bilstein Shocks and struts, eibach pro springs) isn't adjustable at all. I love the set up, but it's to easy so I need to complicate things again I have a few plans for this set up. The best thing about it is I can swap springs out for around $30 a pair to get EXACTLY the ride that I want, performance I want, etc....

This will be a few week project as I have some scheduling conflicts with the friend helping me install them. The cool thing about when you install these is you can actually balance the car. You set the car at the height you want it, then you put it on corner scales. The corner scales then allow you to physically balance the car (with the driver in it) and results in a better balanced, better handling car. I can also set up some softer rear springs for the drag strip and adjust my measurements as needed.

Obviously, this can all get very complicated but I'm lucky enough to have a few very knowledgeable people helping me out along the way! I am by no means an expert, but I'm enjoying learning and can't wait to get these on the car.

This is what showed up at my door today

Keep this thread updated! I've noticed not very many people around here go for coil overs, which is what I want. Corner balancing is also great, especially if you're on the track often. This is by no means a "rice" mod, but probably one of the best mods that you will feel the difference with. I'm very interested in how you're going to like this new setup as compared to your non-adjustable shocks. Subscribed.

Glad to see some interest! I think most people don't understand how they work, I was definitely intimidated at first.

I can definitely say that if these leave a good taste in my mouth, I'll be saving up for a high end set up that replaces the entire front assembly's.

People think coilovers are ricey? Wow...that's...interesting.

Those look awesome! I've always ran adjustable coilovers on my lifted trucks.

Congrats Robert on snagging this great deal

Since this it not a very common mod (mainly driven by price), can't wait to get your feedback on how these perform!

The only thing I've had experience with these on is stock cars which are a different animal anyways!

The thing is Doug, when you really look at this way its not. A good set of shocks and struts start at around $800 and go up, lightweight springs are around $350, this kit retails for $1499.

Add camber plates to that equation and your maybe $500 short of a top of the line set up with a completely adjustable ride height!

$500 is a lot but I try to keep it in perspective.

First I'll congratulate you on what appears to be a good deal.

That said, I'd much rather have adjustable dampers and good springs than coil-overs and non-adjustable dampers. You can tune a car for a balance a lot of ways other than spring rate like tire pressure, size, alignment, bars.... But to get a car to take a set, or turn-in a certain way that's the domain of the dampers.

H&R makes nice products, I sell H&R as one of the many brands we handle. But what most folks will find is that the corner weights of most new cars aren't completely screwed up. And then some tuning can be done via things like adjustable front bar endlinks (which most don't have, but I certainly do).

In fact both the Camaro and Mustang I run were withing about 1-2% on cross weight before cornering them (the Mustang I can only do so much since I can't run coil-overs in F-stock).

More than few times this year I played with the dmaping on my Koni's in the Shelby, if I had non-adjustable shocks, I could not have done that. Further, the H&R uses some really, really, really stiff springs--way beyond what is required and that simply costs mechanical grip. I can't, for the life of my, figure out why they went so stiff, the camber curve is pretty good, and on a decent set of lowering springs, the car doens't even lean that much. In fact with -2 camber I get great tire wear on the Eibach (need Ford Racing) springs with the slightly stiffer bars we run on (35/22 vs. a GT's 34/20).

Sam, I couldn't agree more on some your points. Let me start by saying that with a total out of pocket expense of under $200 after selling a bunch of old and un used parts, I'm pretty happy with myself. My opinion is if I don't like it, I know I can get what the overall cost was back out of them.
I had read the spring rate was definitely high for a street car, what is considered acceptable? On that note, what is the actual size of these springs as I haven't been able to get H&R on the phone.

My biggest irk about this set up is it doesn't have adjustable dampners but at the same time, I don't with my current set up so I don't consider myself losing anything.

This is really an experiment more than anything, but I think ill be happy and if not, ill get my money back out of them!

That's the attitude....

FWIW, you don't love your current setup because it's not adjustable at all, here the shocks still aren't. FWIW if you don't know the springs on the car I run are Eibach Pro's (under a Ford Racing badge), and the car is plenty fast. There are video's in car all over YouTube if you just type my name in and you can see what kind of numbers we pull w/o coil-overs, on a set so stock sized 18x8.5" wheels. Sure the Hoosiers help, but if the suspension couldn't deal at all, there is now way I could generate those numbers.

What are the springs rate? You got RSS's right? They are over 600 in front. Stock GT springs are under 200, Eibach's you have are around 260. And the rears are massively stiff, I think 515 is the rate there, again, in comparison to say your Eibach's it's about 2.5 times higher (and more than that vs. stock). And FWIW, Steeda Comp. springs are nowhere near that high either, in fact about 1/2 of what the H&R rates are...

Exactly, try try again right? I walk a fine line between go and show sometimes, and with the threat of my car going to SEMA to fill some booth space, I kind of figured the option of slamming the car down or jacking it up to get it into the trailer wouldn't be a bad idea. Like I said, the decision wasn't solely for performance, that's just a perk!

And that's correct. I like to play with things, I didn't pick out my current set up and honestly even though I really enjoy how the car handles I know she's got more in her. I know my next investment will be some sway bars and the X5 ball joints. After that I've got all the basics covered and then some! Then it comes down to seeing how it rides, and seeing if I bite the bullet on a Watts link!

I have the Street Performance, the spring rates are not listed on their site. What I also wanted to know was if they are using the pretty-much-standard 2.5" ID, 10" free length springs. That's what I'm familiar with through stock cars, and if so I can really get some awesome deals on springs so I can test and tune my ride that way.

I have no beef against the Pro springs, they are great springs, just needed to make things complicated is all Keeps me interested in the hobby, and that's what counts.
