What exactly would it smell like if it was having a carbon buildup issue?

Read it carefully, you probably did see it on the news and it probably did happen, it's just that it was really static electricity and not a cell phone that caused it.

Don't believe everything you read. Static is one thing. Cell phones igniting gas vapor has not been proven.
