Brenspeed vs Tillman All-Out

I thought I would give my feel about the difference between Brenspeed (BRP) tunes and the Tillman (TLM) All-Out. I have run Brenspeed’s since purchasing the JLT-2 air intake back in 2007 and have been very happy with it. Last month, I got the urge to give it a performance boost following a material upgrade of my S197’s handling. So yesterday night, I finally uploaded Tillman’s 91 All-Out into my PCM and gave it a night test ride in the twisties above Monaco. Here’s my take versus my previous Brenspeed (BRP) tune. Again there is nothing exact or factual here, just a reasonable feedback from the test drive.

(1) Right upon firing up the engine, you will undoubtedly feel that the throttle is way snappier than BRP. BRP was already world’s apart from the stock setting but TLM is taking it one step further by making it extremely edgy. Just brushing off the pedal with your foot is equivalent to applying 25% input on the BRP.
(2) For the first time since putting in my intake + BRP, I found myself giggling again when punching it. TLM all-out will give you another run of that “Holy S***” moment as soon as you floor it.
(3) BRP felt a lot like the engine was turbo’ed. Let me explain. Between idle and 2,750 rpms, BRP resembled the stock engine map. Then between 2,750 and 3,000 rpms, the engine would wake up and give you a major kick in the a**. This was a good solution for daily driving. This is no longer the case with TLM. The engine power is now evenly spread out down low all the way from idle. You now have much more work to modulate throttle input when picking up power. However, from a dig, it is much more progressive than BRP and I feel that I will be able to quicken my 0-60 easily.
(4) Top end is also different. BRP felt like power increase was linear from 2,750 rpms to basically flatten above 5,250 rpms. TLM is changing the pattern to make it feel like the powerband is concave from idle to close to 6,000 rpms. I found myself hitting redline yesterday while I had not done it with BRP in about 2 years because it was worthless to push it that hard. In the twisties, I particularly appreciated the fact that I could keep my power elevated after the apex and come out with more progressive throttle control out of each corner.

The bottomline is not to say that one tune is “better” than the other. To me, it is just up to what kind of drive you are expecting. I certainly could not ever go back to stock though! So here’s how I classified them. My BRP 87 is used for long highway rides when economy is most appreciated. My daily driver setup is BRP 91 because the sleepy low end allows me to drive the car more gently in traffic. And my joy ride / race setup is TLM 91. Each tune is perfect for its own purpose.

Just be careful of not hitting redline too much with TLM all-out. Changing gears by ear based on BRP 91 no longer works the same. You will find the engine screaming a lot less than BRP at the same Rpm level only to look at the meter and find that you’re already 500 rpms higher.

Hope this will help some who are still undecided

Thanks for the review. I have a similar experience with Brenspeed's Race Tune and the Bama Race Tune that I asked Chris Rose to calibrate. Chris did the all-out tunes for Tillman. It is amazing how the car is Jekyll and Hyde with the different tunes. I have an '11 GT automatic, so I don't have as much control of keeping the car in the gear I would like for it to. As a daily driver, I have preferred the Brenspeed tune. It seems to be the most consistent throughout the whole powerband. If I'm feeling frisky, I run the Chris Rose version of the Bama Race Tune. The car totally feels like it has a turbo on it. It's quick under 3K RPM, but once you get to 3,500RPM your butt will pucker. The car absolutely SCREAMS above 3,500RPM all the way out to 7,200RPM. Chris really cares about making his customers happy, so he has been tweaking my tune and just sent me a new one yesterday that so far is looking like the front-runner to become my daily driver. It has a lot more oomph down low and still runs like a scalded dog up top.
