I just talked to local mechanic about doing a gear install. He said $275 not including the gears or the bearing kit. Wtf is a bearing kit? Does it come with the gears? If not, are bearing kits all the same or do I need one specific to my car and gears?
Thanks for the help.

Not sure about the bearing kit, but scroll down a few posts to the "frpp 4.10" post...sounds like the install is CRITICAL. I would suggest a shop with tons of rearend set-up experience. Also, from all I have read and heard, the frpp gears are the best going.

Your best bet is to try to find a shop that specializes in Ford gear set-ups. As Alan said, you should only need a bottle of friction modifier (from Ford dealer) and maybe a shim kit, although a good shop will probably have them anyway.
I recommend the Ford Racing gearset as it also includes a new "squash" sleeve and pinion nut.

Hey clockworks,
Your gears will come with nothing other than a ring and pinion. Most good installers will inspect your existing carrier and pinion bearings to make sure they are worthy of re-install with new gears. Many just insist on putting new ones in to reduce the possibility of a bad outcome. It's a small price to pay for piece of mind. He's not going to make much $$ off the mark-up on the bearing kit or the gears. Installation is always critical with gears, even more so in the '05s, IMO.

Clem, thanks for clearing that up for me.
Do you know where I can buy a bearing kit on the internet? Does Motive make one specifically for their gears? Thanks.

I would have your installer provide the gears and any additional parts, if possible. That way any problem or mistake with those parts is on them, not you. As I said, the mark-up is not that much on this kind of stuff. I'm all for saving a few bucks, but this isn't one of those places to pinch pennies.
BTW, the install price you were quoted is not out of line if your shop is reputable. (There's that word again ) Some have paid alot less, some a little more. In any metropolitan area, expect a higher rate.
Most of all, Good Luck! After two tries, mine is dead nuts.

If your installer screws up pressing the one off let him pay for the new one.
If you get charged for a new one ask for the old one to make sure. Get the price in writing.
