I wouldnt weld the system!! Because in time if the Midas guy is wrong, which I'm willing to bet he is, you'll end up with a welded system on your car and it'll be a while b4 u get that sucker off. I wouldnt do it unless you know for sure.

The guys at Flowmaster told me to take a rubber mallot to the rear and underside of the muffler and if I heard a rattle, they were defective.

Mav,
I did the rubber mallet thing last night after seeing your previous post, and it made no noise on either side. I figured my installation was to blame. I was concerned about the welding the pipes as well even though I know it's the best way to do it, so I asked the manager. He said they weld it on the outside of the pipe, so that it is easy to break the weld and grind off the excess if the muffler needs to be replaced. He said they would also work with Flowmaster to get a replacement if necessary. Flowmaster and Midas have a dealer agreement, apparently.

Thanks for that tip. I will try that. I don't have any noise from mine yet, but I only have a little over 2K miles on the car.

This is happening to me. It just started rattling recently. It started when it really got cold out. It's happening in my left muffler though, not the right. MikeM got under my car and confirmed it. There isn't anything loose inside when you bang on it. It rattles really loud though at exactly 3500 rpm. It sounds like dog poop.

I'll call Flowmaster tomorrow. I hope they don't ask for a receipt because I got them used. In the previous owners defense, I didn't notice any rattle until just recently. I don't think they were given to me with the problem.

Aha, so perhaps that's what I'm hearing. I also seem to have this problem, or at least I think that's what it is. When it's cold out (and only apparently when it's cold) and I start the car, I hear a load, metallic vibration sound as the car idles down. It happens for a few seconds a couple of times and that's pretty much it. I haven't noticed it at any higher RPMs, no or is reproducable if the car is warm. Perhaps I should contact Flowmaster too. I do love the mufflers, though! The sound is awesome.

Called today - the guy I spoke to tried to tell me it was my X pipe making the noise

I told him 'Uhhh no - it never did it after I first installed the X pipe.....'

Transferred me to some guy named Don who 'handles this kind of stuff'

I got his voicemail

Traveling tomorrow but calling again from the road... I better get a decent response - wanna get this handled before Fun Ford next weekend

I don't think its a "problem" really, but with the O/R H-pipe my whole car vibrates under load at low RPMs. I never noticed it before (mirrors vibrating) but I had change in the cupholder today that wouldn't shut up.

I just called and talked to Mark. He said he wanted a receipt and credit card number and they would send me another set. He said they wanted me to send back the old set. If they determined that the mufflers were not defective they would charge me for them (!!!).

Now I just gotta get a hold of a receipt.

WOW! That's not cool!

Well everyone, I opted for a full refund! I will get the FRPP/Borla's, if I can find them in stock!

An update on my Flowmaster situation - I took it in to Midas this morning to have them take a look. Turns out the clamps were loose, which was causing the rattle. I was sure I cranked them down when I installed it and told the tech this, and he said I should have let it warm up and then tighten the clamps again. So I guess this would be a good tip for anyone that puts on the Flows. All is fine now, and I am still loving that sound - now rattle free.

Has anyone else solved their problem? I ask because I would like to have Flows put on my '05.

Well, I ordered mine at the end of last year, and the only thing wrong with them was my installation

I would think they have the weld problems taken care of by now; I was just paranoid. I love how they look with the black less noticable muffler and polished tips, and the sound is awesome. The only thing I regret is not checking the clamps again after I installed them.

Wasn't pushed up all the way huh?

I had my rearend up on jack stands today so I took another good look at the mufflers. I have 2 clamps on them and they seem pretty solid. The rattle definately sounds like it's comming from inside the muffler, I put my ear on it while it was running.

The muffler doesn't push up as far as it should though it seems. I got em used so they were already dented in from the previous owner's clamps. A friend of mine has one of those muffler pipe grenades that I can use to expand the flowmaster inlet pipe up a little. That way I can push it up another half inch and see if that makes a difference. Heck I'll even add another clamp to make sure.

Anyone tried that rubber mallet test on these? I'm wondering what kind of noise the defective ones made. I don't think mine have a problem, but I'd like to make sure.

I just put my Flows back on for the heck of it. I had the same problem with sliding them back on from when I clamped them down before. I just put them on a bench and got a hammer and a round piece of bar stock, put it inside the inlet and beat the ridges out and they slid right on.

I forgot how loud these were with the o/r h-pipe!!!

You can definitely hear a distinct noise when you beat on them with a rubber mallet. In my case, the passenger muffler was making the rattle. So when I hit it and then compared it to the tone of the drivers side which was good.....you could definitely hear it. It kinda sounds like there is loose change in the muffler...and when you hit it, you can hear it rattle around.

Okay, does this describe what you all are experiencing?

I just thought I was screwed. If you all are getting replacements, I may have to dig up my old reciept!!

I had a muffler shop weld them in a while back and about 2 months after I had them, they started to rattle.

Thanks,

-N

No, those sound like typical Flows. However, that x-pipe makes it have a lot higher pitched tone.

You'll know it when you hear that sound. You can definitely hear a metallic rattle sound. The best thing I can relate it to is if any of you have ever had a heat shield on a catalytic converter on an older car rust and vibrate loose.

Ok, add me to the list! My driver side muffler started randomly sounding like an electric razor at certain RPMs ... I 1st noticed it when it was idling outside the dyno on the 4th. Like I had heard it intermittently before that but this time it kept doing it as long as the car stayed at like 1000rpm.

Will the 1-800-544-4761 take me to the problem center or just the company main line?

Mine have now been replaced due to the same issue. Flowmaster even paid to have them re-installed, and the shipping of the old ones back to them.
