Has anybody here done a motor swap -- say, a 03/04 Cobra engine/blower/etc and T-56 into a 2005 Mustang GT? I know Sean Hyland has done it, and offers to do it for $20K. Youch. I'm curious if any regular Joe has done it, and what pitfalls they ran into.

Why bother?
For what he charges you could build up the 3v to over 500hp for a fraction of the cost.

To me it wouldn't be worth it.

I agree with Boomer, why would you want to remove a brand new 3V?????? Just mod the engine that's already there, at least there's more infor/stats on that job.

I haven't seen any info on that swap on this site anywhere.

Now granted the 03/04 block is build to withstand nice ammounts of boost.... but the 3v can be built up nicely as well.

Its not like the 2 motors have large ammount of displacement between them (like a GT500 motor swap into a GT or a lighting engine swap....)

Well, what I want is a cross between the 05 and my 03. That would be ideal. I can see it now. White, blue stripes, 6-speed, 550 horsepower.

Problem is, I can't figure out how to do it without costing so much money that it becomes more economical to just wait for the GT500. So that is why I'm trying to determine what would be the most economical way to upgrade a GT.

Pull the 3v Engine and replace the internals; the crank, the rods, the pistons, might as well do the valvetrain too. Port the heads, toss in a custom cam and Blow her and Inject her. Im sure you can get 600hp fairly easy but its going to cost you about $7000-$8000.

You can but it will cost ya. Livernois Motorsports sells forged 3V long blocks with their ported heads. The block is cast iron just like the 03/04 Cobra's and has a forged crank, rods and pistons. They offer a number of options for the rotating assembly so you can go with a basic set up using the 03/04 Cobra internals or use all custom parts. Either way the short block should be able to handle 20 plus lbs of boost. Combine the short block with Whipple's blower set up for the 05's at about 20 lbs of boost and :worship: :worship: :worship:

Problem is it's just not cost effective. Take the cost of an 05 GT plus the cost for the above and you could buy a GT500 easily. Whipple's blower kit is $5000.00 - $6000.00 alone, add the cost of the GT say 27g's and your at $32,000.00 not including the cost of the short block or labor.

Wait for the GT500, it will be cheaper and come with a factory warranty. At least until you add the smaller pulley and tune........................

That is unfortunately the conclusion I keep coming to every time I run the numbers.

Dammit, I hope the GT500 is worth the wait, this will be the longest I've ever owned a single Mustang .
