Alternatives to factory auto shifter?
Alternatives to factory auto shifter?
Many many many years ago I installed a Hurst dual gate shifter into my 75 Camaro's console - looked like a factory install. Now I have the Mustang thinking there's been a boatload of these things sold, so Hurst or B&M must have a descent oem swap. I can't find anything from either. Maybe the after market shift kit market hasn't been all that hot? I'm kind of shocked actually.
Yes, I've seen the TCI and honestly, I'm not into the Transformers look - too industrial looking. I also saw MGW (or something like that), but it doesn't look gated or ratcheted to keep from over-shifting. Plus the missing indicator is a deal breaker not to go any further.
So, any other choices? I really miss my old dual-gate.
Thanks.

Ya, I went back and took another look at it. It'd be better if the paddle was a lot smaller, maybe a pair of triggers under the shifter. I guess I just haven't warmed up to it yet.
I settled for the TCI and like the basic cosmetic intent. If you can get past your adversion to the apperance I think you would really appreciate it's functionality, I use mine to down shift in traffic or rural roads. To each his own I guess, I hope you find something you like.
BTW... it's got a 1/2x20 threaded top so you are not limited to the TCI logo shifter handle. Some guys went with a traditional looking round ball on theirs. I went with a different design "T" handle. I would imagine you could mount nearly anything you can drill & tap.
I don't think it looks too bad, at least not in my interior...

EDIT: from a little further back.

Is there an actual "AUTOMATIC" transmission out there that would be a major (although expensive) performance upgrade? Basically what is the top of the line aftermarket or ford automatic transmission! I know this sounds off topic but if i were to change my shifter to the rachet shifter i would like it to have some function other than looks!
My concern is to cover the lost power from the automatic compared to manual with automatic means if that is possible!

Looks good David! Read a lot about it and everyone who bought one seems to love it, but I still can't get past the looks, just seems out of place. Prob just me, I'll be the first to admit it. Thanks.

Another choice is the powerglide (what I have just gone to). You won't find many in a S197. It's a GM product and you have to fab brackets and such, also the driveshaft needs a GM yoke. Similar operation to the 4r70w but only 2 speeds. Simpler and way lighter than the 4r70w and easy to upgrade. Really for a dedicated race car only.

I know Evolution performance makes the trans brace and brackets to fit a powerglide to the S197. But other than that i am planning on the TCI 5R55 that can handle 800hp seeing as i really do not want to go higher than 600 and the stock one is rated by ford to only handle 450hp (even though there are some people here with more HP and still the stock trans.) Also FYI the only auto shifter upgrade out there is the TCI, B&M was working on one but i do not know if they have released it yet and it was not all that appealing.

I do not use my shifter at the track, I just put it in "D" because I can't think or shift as precisly as the 5R55 itself. I use mine to down shif around town in traffic or on secondary roads. Sorry you hate the looks of the TCI, I bet if you tried one you would like it ... just close your eyes while shifting..... oooops.. never mind that one...
No I don't have any pics of the old girl anywhere on this site. And yes it has the original 351 Cleveland in it. Here is a vid of the exhaust and a ride is all I can offer.

Thanks. You are correct about the audio. It is just a cheapo 10 year old digital camera.
