+1 the 514 puts down 625 hp stock and they are building a new 514, don't know bout it yet, but it should just barly fit under the hood. plus you can supercharge that to well over 800hp.

It all depends on your plans, but I'd stick to the above posts and go with internals and a blower. If you plan to run either Centri or Twin Screw, keep in mind I can do a killer package deal on internals and Kenne Bell, Whipple, Saleen, Vortech, Procharger, Magnacharger, Paxton, etc.

WOW, I never thought this thread would take off like this. Guys, this is great! Constructive criticism is highly encouraged! As this is starting to bring me back to reality, I realize I have unrealistic goals, especially when it comes to the HP I need and $ per HP! Perhaps a street mannered 450~500 HP is more realistic? Don, giving it some thought I think may agree with you about the stroker senero that a stroker may pull the piston too far out of the cylinder bore, which can result in piston slap and/or scuffing. Although I will have to do some more research to verify this?
However, I still believe there is no replacement for displacement, I want power and torque down low – I do not want to have to run the engine to 8g’s to develop its power. You guys have given me some practical ideas, with the exception of slapping an LS1 in my stang. Lately I have been reading up on the D.S.S. 4.6 and 5.4 hypo shortblocks. Although, I guess in the end supercharger may be the way to go… What else have you guys done to make your stang produce respectable power. Engine configs, blower types and tuning combos?

when this thread first started I wanted to chime in and say I completely agree. I always wondered why the car only puts out so little until reading don post in this thread. I forgot all about that car. That car is silly fast and beats a zo6 and viper stock. When a stock zo6 lines up against dons car it will tremble. You can see the zo6 drivers face very humble. However dons car is not stock and no old school sound. But there is still hope that for a little mods it can go fast. Don's car keeps up with the big boys(drag cars) but I haven't seen him kill one yet. The big boys will run circle around a stock mustang but dons car will keep up with it. When you see dons car run it will give you hope.
Somone installed a 427, 428 or 429 (that's 7 liters guys) Ford Racing Crate motor in an S197 with no mods to the inner fenders, strut towers or firewall. I think they only moved the radiator slightly. I'll look for the article again tonight. I can't remember the resulting HP.

I have looked into the options out there for around 450-500hp. Making NA power out of a small displacement motor and still be able to drive the car is an excersize in futility.
People always love to say, "well, BMW makes a 420hp 4 liter NA engine". This is true, but they have hundreds, if not thousands of hours into that motor to make it run on the street and make the 420.
Do you want something that will not start in the winter, has no power brakes or AC, barely idles at 1300 RPM, has a peeky powerband with crappy throttle response, etc.
I am not saying that will happen, but very well may. The amount of tuning to go from, yay! it runs. To it runs on the street, does not overheat, etc. Is enormous.
You either need 450+ cubic inches here (which would make a fun drag car, but kill the package IMO) or a blower.
For my money, if I ever want more power, I say whipple the thing. 6 grand, modest work, 500 at the crank.
As it stands now, I am happy with my 350-360 approx HP in my daily driver. The car is fun as hell to drive hard. Makes all the right noises and handles and stops well. Yet is still comfortable as hell for times when I am tired and just want to throw the AC and radio on, and cruise home.

there are plenty of engines making over 100hp per liter in NA form. ive never seen one with less than 4 valves though. the later generation toyota 4age engine is a 1.6 liter making 160hp with 5 valves, compression ratio like 10 something. this is about 10 years ago too. i thinks its the s54 by bmw, in the e46 m3 makes 333hp from 3.2 liters, compression ratio like 11.5. both of these are high revving engines with variable cam timing. alot of extreme performance for the mustang reduce the use of variable cam timing which hurts daily driveability a little. i think with higher compression and water/methanol injection, a 5.2-5.3 stroker could make over 500. 600 is too high
I'm not adding much. Just gonna agree. If you want a serious increase in power, beef up the bottom end and go FI. Add a little NOS if you want to. These motors are too small in displacement and design to produce "big" numbers. Especially if you want a lot of bottom end. Almost anything you do to make more NA HP is going to shift the power band upwards.
And for the argument of the small displacement motors that make more hp per liter n/a. Look at most of their torque curves. The only way to make them have that much hp is to increase max rpm and settle for less bottom end. Simple physics. Look at current 600cc sportbikes. They make approx 200hp per liter, but are 4 valve engines running over 15k rpm and have some of the flattest (ie boring) torque curves ever. Yeah they fly when wound up, but I'll take the torque of my buell everyday of the week.

Have you priced a 427 side-oiler? If you can even find one for sale...
That engine alone is worth more than a new Mustang GT...
You might be able to mount a steam engine in there too, but that wouldn't make much sense either...
