4.10's - Dealer Won't Do?
Ok, so, in reading all the threads on gearing (there's a pun), I decided to do the 4.10 thing. Most people seem to agree that the Ford Racing gears are least prone to whine. I went to the FR site and saw my local dealer listed. I asked them if they could do it and I got this response:
"We have been told that is something we cant legally do. by changing the rear end ratio, you in effect change the vehicle calibration which is a $10,000.00 fine."
1) What does this mean? Is it an emmissions thing or an odometer / speedometer thing or both? I can't see how changing to 4.10's would effect my ability to pass emmissions. Thoughts?
2) Anybody know of a good shop in the DC area to get / install the FR gears?

Never heard that one before. I was advised by two Ford dealers and Lidio with Alt. Auto not to do 4.10's in my 06 auto, but they said 4.10's would be fine in a manual. Speedo does have to be recalibrated, but thats no big deal. I don't understand their hang up with your gears.
Yeah, here in the south, its almost illegal to be legal when it comes to mods. Officers respect you more if you're a non-rice car buff and you're respectful of your surroundings (traffic, neighborhoods, etc)
My dealer will do darn near anything I want to the car and not think twice and will warranty it.

Nick,
My FRPP 4.10's were installed properly at Maryland Performance Center in Gaithersburg - 301-258-8883. Ask for George (the owner). Tell him Adam sent you. If he hangs up on you just keep calling back!

Actually any modification that alters the factory calibration is a violation of Federal Emission laws. Penalties can be up to $10,000. this is a 50-state issue, but of course, is treated more harshly in the Peoples Republic of California. I will admit there are some who do not take this seriously-but if they don't that is, in my opinion, reckless at the least. I do know that our diagnostic equipment does not allow us to recalibrate the PCM for a 4.10 axle. Aftermarket tuners do, of course. Just My .02 worth.

This stuff is such BS. Ford should have offered a 4.10 rear as a factory option. My frick'n Ranger has 4.10s from the factory for Pete's sake. I don't know how true the $10,000 fine is but I do know that just because the geniuses in our government make one more of their 10,000 rules and regulations doesn't make it right.
Bottom line, get the 4.10s put in. You'll love them.

OMG ... I got my car back today with the new 4.10's ... amazing ... I love it! 1) great pick-up in 5th; 2) less noise from exhaust on freeway (b/c i am cruising at 2500 rpm not 2000; 3) mpg? i'll have to get back to you on that. Total cost (not including the Ford Racing gears I bought off the web) was $544 ($144 parts and $400 labor). Used Maryland Performance (as was suggested above ... THANKS SO MUCH) and thought they were great. They added a solid spacer (as opposed to the shim kit) which they told me they had had much more success with. So far, so good ... very quiet. I'd totally recommend this shop and this mod.

Not hijacking this but I have started to hear that you need to step up to 4.30's over the 4.10's.
This is one mod I would love to do, but it seems pretty complex getting the shims right.

I don't think you Need to do anything, LOL, you can do whatever you want. I read that an article said that the 4.30's were the right gears for the car if your really looking to get the most out of it, but 4.10's or 3.73 will all work fine

great great ... I will say, tho, that 4.30's might be too much for _me_ owing to the fact that this is a "daily driver" ... can't wait to hear what you guys who get 4.30's think.

I am confused, you paid $544 plus the gears. At first you said total cost was not including gears.
Either way, that sounds high. I paid $160 for an install by a recommended installer.

Ok ... let me look at my invoice ... 1) Ford Racing 4.10 I got off the internet from a Ford Dealer in GA for $244.79 including tax and shipping to DC. 2) Installation was $543.87 for a performance shop in MD. Now, that may have been a tad high, but, frankly, with all the "issues" people seem to be having, it was worth it to me to go to a performance shop that had done a few 4.10 in '05-'06 GT's already. They spent a lot of time making sure it was right ... used a solid spacer as opposed to a shim kit, etc. Maybe I paid to much, but, I am very happy w/ a quality job on a mod that seems really really tricky to get right the first time.
My 4,30,s and TruTrac posi unit are on there way and getting installed this weekend.Along with Hooker Supercomp LT headers.Underdrive pully,AC Delete kit
