That's a bit high IMO. A Manual Trans 5.0 should not have anymore than a 12% drivetrain loss, the only cars that I've ever seen to have that kind of loss are the the Automatics.
My 05 put down 267rwhp SAE corrected on pump gas, hood closed with 5k on the clock back in 2005.

I wouldn't touch it if the claimed HP is 412 and has a 15% drive train loss.

From what I've seen/read amongst this and other forums and on the track, that's about norm for cars hitting 12's. Again though you can't yardstick modded cars to new ones especially when you add mods such as gears, DR's, and the like. I can make a 05-09 GT hit 12's without adding any hp, yet I can't use that to say all I need is a 300 hp mustang to beat a 426 hp car. If that were the case, then I can say all it takes to beat a pullied Terminator is a 360 hp Fbody when (in my case at least) it's 360 wheel hp and a whole lot of other mods.

I don't recall anyone suggesting the new mustang will lag in anything, most agree it should be quicker. What many including myself are saying it's not going to be a blowout. Taking what we know on hand the 20-25 hp advantage for the Camaro vs the 400 lb or so advantage of the Mustang gives a potential 15-20 hp racing advantage or 1.5 to 2 tenths advantage on hp alone. Of course other factors come into play, engine power curves, trans and final gearing, and ability to put it to the ground as well, but most agree that the Mustang should pull it off.
I agree with you, I'm not sure what some of these other guys are thinking. I don't see how anybody believes that the mustang will totally dominate the camaro in a 1/4 mile. So is the new mustang going to be just as fast the 2007 GT500 that had 500 hp then? I mean, those cars put down 1/4 mile times in the high 12's pretty often even though they were capable of lower 12's.

While the mustang has the slight advantage at the track, the majority of races will be up to the driver (at least stock). The camaro will probably have the advantage once modding begins though because there is already more out there for the ls3 than the 5.0.

Per the Motor Trend comparison, it looks like round one goes to the Stang!

Of course, what will round two bring when the '11 Camaro and Challenger come out? I seriously doubt they're going to take this lying down.

Ahhh, competition, gotta love it, especially us the enthusiasts who benefit most. No way would Ford have poured this much time, money and effort into the Stang were it not for the Challenger and Camaro. Just look at the leisurely and incremental pace of Mustang development up until these cars hit the scene. Gotta love Ford's new vigor and determination.

Exactly. Conversely, though, as stangfoeva pointed out a couple of days ago, there would be no new Camaro and Challenger if not for the success of the S197 Mustang.

This is just great that we can experience the HP wars like are fathers and grandfathers did. I was born in '66 so i was to young to enjoy and the 70's , 80's and 90's were a dud for real muscle car lovers. The only real car was the GN and GNX. You had to buy a 60's car to get to feel the real HP. Now we just need to bring back the GTO, 442, ect.

Not taking anything awat from the Camaro, it's a nice car. However, I would not buy one even if Ford soldiered on with the 3V 4.6.

I greatly prefer the looks and interior of the Mustang, as well as the lighter weight and smaller size.

this months Wards Auto World gave the new camaro a top ten best interior...

even my 14 yr old son was looking at the magazine and said- 'Dad that car had one of the ugliest interiors ever'.

IMHO When all is said in done in showroom stock condition the Mustang will cut 1/10 quicker 60's and 2/10 Quicker 1/4's. Traps will be similar as this is simply an issue of which suspension is better suited to the strip in stock form and the lower overall gearing (even with Base 3.31) in the Mustang.

On the street it basically comes down to looks and the Mustangs lighter feel versus the Camaros more sophisticated rear suspension. The Mustang also has a much better transmission feel, Lower overall gearing (in all rear axle ratios available) and closer ratios.

For me the 5.0 only because I hit my head getting into a Camaro. And the 5.0 doesn't have wheel weights on the calipers.

The 2011 5.0 is putting 370-375whp on multiple dyno tests now.
the camaro suffers from much more drivetrain loss.
