Yesterday afternoon I went into New Orleans and was driving on a 3-lane divided highway. I was in a bit of a rush and was going through lanes and getting by all the slow traffic. There was a Corvette C-5 in the left lane riding close and trying to intimidate the slow car in the left lane. I sped around them both in the right lane and was on my way. A couple minutes later I look in the rearview mirror and see him flying through lanes and eventually catching up to me. It was at that time that we were coming up to a red light. I was in the middle lane and came up to the light and stopped. He pulls up right next to me in the left lane and it's obvious that he wants to race. Just by how he came up and got on the side of me. Neither the guy driving, nor the woman in the passenger seat, looked at me once. Thye just looked ahead. We were both the first in our lanes, and I looked around for any cops and it was clear. This is a pretty wide highway with a huge median (at least 15 feet wide), no people around, light traffic and speed limit of 45. So, when the light turned green I was power braking to just under 2000 rpm and let her go. I spun the tires a little for about 2 seconds and the rear was moving around a little. But I was still able to immediately take the lead and get to about a car and a half in front of him before he finally started to catch up at around 50-55. At that time I had let up a bit because I wasn't going to go more than 65 in an area that was pretty known for speed traps. Now, keep in mind that my tires did spin a bit and his did not. I also had my wife in the passenger seat (as well as a 12-pack of Corona longnecks behind her seat ). My car is also an auto and his was obviously a stick. And I had him beat until around 60 if I had not let up. And I'm positive I could have stayed with him (a car's length) up to a hundred just judging by the speed at which he caught up to me. If I had my 4.10 gears, wider tires and had started off smoother, I have no doubt I could have taken him. Either way, it was real close. So, to swingle and others who have gears, computer, exhaust, intake, etc... you will be able to take a Corvette. A C-5 at least.

And on a second note, I am not familiar with Corvettes but this particular one had an emblem I haven't seen before on the front fender. It was rectangular, fairly long (maybe 4 inches) and not tall at all (maybe an inch if that). The writing was small and there was some red on it... possibly something about a bullet? Does anyone know what this may be? I'm curious to know exactly what type of Vette this was.

It was definitely a coupe. Not a convertible. Good to know it was the LS6 too and not the LS1.

After doing some more research on the net on the difference between the regular coupe on the LS1 and the Z06 on the LS6 platform, I am pretty certain that the car I raced was a Z06. According to sites, only the Z06 has the wheels shown in the picture below and the mesh brake inlets by the rear wheels. The car I raced had these wheels and brake vents and looked just like this one, but was either black or a very dark blue. The guy might not have known how to drive that well, but it was definitely a close race and I had him until 55-60.

Edit: I forgot the pic, here it is...

Come on people. You know this wasn't a z06. You may have been able to keep up with a regular c5. The 2002 c5 still has you beat in all categories, but barely. Now if it was a z06. He could of hit 100 and back down to 0 in about the same time you'll hit 100 (14.01 to be exact). I love the Mustang, and that's the car I'm getting (or 2006/07). However, we don't even compare to a 2005 c6 vette. The regular 2005 vette does 0-100 in 9.9. What are we at, 13.5. I'm not getting down on the Mustang. I just think we can't compare to a c5 z06. But a regular c5, we'll give a shot.

I understand what you are saying, and maybe the guy didn't know how to drive or may have been toying with me... but this was definitely a Z06 after researching it on the net. I can understand him putting badges on it (even though I can't see the guy doing that when he was in his late 40's), but there's no way he got the wheels and rear brake vents from a Z06. Aftr looking at pics on the net with my wife, we both agreed that this is the car...

Edit: And I knew from the start I wasn't going to be able to beat him, much less even stay with him. My wife actually convinced me to race (gotta love her) and I said why not, I'll see how close I can get. But after reading the specs on the Z06, he must have been toying with me or just an older guy who wasn't into racing and doesn't know how to drive it. It's funny but I have noticed every Corvette I see is an older guy just cruising, which is fine. But why buy a $50,000 car with 400+ HP if you aren't going to at least use it once in a while. Or at least drive the speed limit. Everyone I know who has owned a Mustang drives the crap out of it and that's what they are for.

in a race up to 50mph with a manual vette and a auto '05 GT it might have been close if the vette guy was a poor driver.I believe the story.I beat a few LS1 camaros in my '01 GT in stoplight to stoplight races. My GT was a auto and took off pretty good.

It is possible to hold with a zo6. I have a 2003 Mach1 all stock except for magnaflow exhaust. My buddy has a 2003 zo6 and wanted to race me one day. I thought i would lose badly but agreed to race just to see how close i could get. We were dead even through 1st gear, I power shifted second and pulled a half of a car length on him. At 45 to 50 mph he pulled away from me and i let off. We did this 3 times with same results.

I guess the IRS is the reason i was able to stay even through 45-50 mph. I have ridden with him before and the IRS vibrates badily from a stop. I think the live axle keeps our cars in the race through second gear.

As far as a regular C5 goes it should be about even through the quarter mile. I run 13.30's and i know the 2005 mustang is about the same. The c5 is suppose to run 13.20s. With IRS i think we win stoplight to stoplight.

Probably. I win about 75% of my races when the other guy doesn't know we are racing.......

Keep in mind though too that my car was about even with an '03 Mach 1 when it was stock. I've added around 60 more HP at the rear wheels. I'm telling you, with 4.10's on this car and possibly an x-pipe down the line, wider tires and a better tune once I have everything installed... I'd probably be able to take an '03 Z06 from light to light.

I'm going to drive my Mustang like a Corvett, I won't care if the Neon's, Vipers or any other miss placed AJ wants to race or not.

I hate to burst your bubble, but the 02+ Z06's are capable of low 12s@113-115. I have even read of high 11s bone stock, but this is extremely rare. We are going to get smoked unless S/Ced or running slicks and have most of the bolt on's available.

I'm sure you've heard those numbers, but that's coming from really good drivers at a track in perfect conditions... keep that in mind. 95% of all Corvette drivers I have ever seen are older guys who don't know how to drive. I'm not saying I could beat an '02+ Z06 with a good driver... but a 02+ Vette with an average driver, it would be real close. Bottom line is though that it is pretty evident that you can buy a $28,000 Mustang and put a couple grand into it and get very close to beating a 400+HP $45,000 Vette.

Well what I can say is that already rolling at 80 , I was able to hang with my buddy's 2002 ZO6 and stay nice and even with him right off his quarter panel where I was when he first nailed the accelerator on an empty highway past 1:30am - stayed right with him all the way through 120.

http://forums.bradbarnett.net/index....opic=16637&hl=

After about 122 though, he REALLY started to walk away from me though.
My car is bone stock, auto. He told me later he didn't downshift but then again, I didn't either.

He did say later he expected me to suddenly shrink in his rearview when he got on it and when I didn't, he was surprised.

Those Vettes are most awesome though....
