Looking at the latest dyno numbers posted between the 04mach 1 and the 05gt makes me wonder how they are getting more hp and tq with only sohc and 3valves vs. the dohc 4valve in the mach 1?

Did they use bigger pistons with bigger bore, or even longer rods with a matched crank for stroking purposes? How did they match the power with less?

crypto,
There is really no good way to answer your question because there is an almost endless series of variables that go into determining the output of an engine. Number of valves is just one of those variables.

Bye the way, the short block is taken directly from the Mach 1 so the variables you list are all identical.

Basically with the 3V design and VCT they were able to extract similar/higher power number than the 4V motor. Couple this with the fact that if you ever want to do a cam swap you only have to swap 2 instead of 4

2v/3v with their larger single intake valves will always get a little more torque off the line, but tire faster up on top of the RPMs where the DOHC is pulling strong. The 3v helps bridge the gap dramatically, for half the cost. At low rpms you want as much air in as you can, at high rpm you want as much going out as you can.

The 3V and 4V heads have very similar flow characteristics. Just simply the number of valves doesn't make one head better than another. It's port volume, shape, flow, etc.

Don't start acting like a salesman Kevin.

The 3V has 2 intake valves

Variable cam timing and variable intake size. Different port shape exhaust shape ect. One of the Ford mags has an article on the 3v head flow characteristics compared to th 4v a couple of months ago it is still on there online mag.

Correct me if I am wrong but I think the new 3v motor has more compression than the Mach 1 4v. This can have a great effect on horsepower. My 03 Cobra has a compression of 8.5. This is a low compression rate for the supercharged motor which is great to help stop detonation but not great on a naturally aspirated motor. Take the supercharger off my car and a Mach 1 4v will make more power.

Consider yourself corrected The Mach 1 4V has a 10.1:1 compression ratio, while the new 05 3V has a 9.8:1 compression ratio.

And going back to the original poster, I have yet to see a dyno chart of a stock 05 Mustang that shows it putting out more power than my stock 03 Mach 1 did! Show me a dyno sheet of a stock 05 putting down 287+ rwhp and 312+ rwtq, then you can make that statement, but not until.
