Okay-so my first oil change is coming up. On all my other cars I have always used conventional oil. However, given the fact my Mustang is the first car I am even considering keeping long term I am wondering about synthetic oil.

I need your guys experiences and opinions: pros and cons on each, likes and dislikes (price is a given of course). Any links to research and independent studies (which seem to be as rare as a Sacramento Kings Finals appearance) would be appreciated.

Once I hear more, then I can decide if I hand my Ford dealer a box of synthetic oil when I go in for my free maintenance over the next three years.

 

I've heard that for older cars, synthetic is not the way to go as it can/will cause oil consumption.

As for newer cars, it is all I use. In the wife's Diesel Jetta, I use a synthetic that is about $25 a gallon. (10,000 between changes, though.) If the car is new enough, I think it is a good insurance policy. I've heard good things about Mobil 1, but never used it. If you go with it, go early and stick to it.
