Ponies on The Run (Again)

Completely different subject....
Not to minimize Bill's problems, but I dodged a bullet about 30 mins ago. Got a call from the shop and they did not have the parts. Whipple it seems backordered every kit due to some backorders from Ford Racing, primarily the fuel pumps. Estimated time was about 1-1/2 to 2 weeks away.
Adam did some hunting around and after calling the owner of Whipple, I will have my parts and everything I need(they need) to start the install tomorrow !!! If I didn't already need a beer, I do now !!

Dizzyland will be free!! Flight and hotel shouldn't be bad... we found everything for $1400 through Orbitz.

I hope it is not engine related.
Good luck and keep us posted.

You can skip gears all you want with no damage. We were just saying that an accidental shift to 5th with WOT when you think you are in 3rd does put a huge load on the engine. For example, if you want to see if your clutch is going to slip, throw it into 5th at a low speed and floor it.
But, with what Hector is saying, the small amount of time going to 5th (without boost) wouldn't hurt a thing... just a little bogging.

AT WOT, would it put LESS load on the engine, because you would theoretically be at a speed that's appropriate for the gear. For example, if you accelerated to redline in first and second, you should be at around 60mph when you shift to 3rd (assuming 3.55 gears). Therefore, it would be no different than just punching the gas at highway speeds. On the other hand, under slow speeds, wouldn't the load be greater, because it's really bogged down. I honestly don't know the answer to my question.
But, either way, load or no load, at high speeds or low, I don't see where mis-shifting would have caused a problem for Bill. Even if he was boosting prior to shifting, don't superchargers now have bypasses so that when cruising on the highway there's no boost (for fuel economy). Wouldn't the same principle apply for Bill's situation. Also, I wouldn't think there was even enough belt drive speed to spin the charger enough to caues a problem at that load.
I would understand if he was spraying nitrous and it happened, but not supercharger.
BTW, I agree that that's the best way to see if teh clutch is slipping.

This is not the problem... we were just talking about it before we knew that Hector got off the gas very quickly. The above could be a problem if it was sustained for a long period of time.
The only time a S/C bypasses for fuel economy is if there is a clutch like on an A/C compressor. Otherwise, you are always spinning the turbine. Even my car doesn't bypass anything until you get off the gas, then vacuum opens the bypass.
Which is funny, because even when I'm making ZERO boost, there is air being sucked into the engine. When I get off the gas to shift, you can hear that naturally aspirated air fluttering out of the bypass valve. Sound = tah tah tah tah tah tah
When I shift while under boost, it is FORCED out of the bypass valve when vacuum opens it. Sound = PHEEEW.
I think Kyle can spell those better!

^ I edited my post above while you were typing.
Although, I still think there wouldn't be a big load (no jokes people...I couldn't think of a better adjective) if shifted 2-5 at a somewhat high rpm to begin with, say, any speed above about 50 mph.
But, that's not the current problem anyway

lets just hope it's a clutch, it'll be easier and mucho cheaper to fix than a busted engine. plus, we'll have a TB writeup on clutch changes

Tom: See ya out here next year!
Jed: Nice pics! Chili Size & Bud Light..
Thanks again for the support guys.
What I did yesterday...
Got the car up on jack stands.
Drug a magnet thru the vent/inspection hole under the bellhousing; nothing but a little black grease.
Pulled the starter and did a visual of the flywheel; all looked okay to me.
Did a Whack-A-Mole on it, kinda sounded dead with a hint of spring vibration.
video: http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v6...t=MVI_9966.flv
Also hit around the bellhousing, but nothing sounded loose. Did have a distinct ringing sound, unlike the flywheel.
Per George's suggestion, I'll be draining the oil and visually inspect it for any metal shavings, will also drag a magnet thru it.
If I see this.. I'm hosed.

Good deal Brian! Bet you feel like sticking around the shop all day instead of going back to work.

Thanks Everyone ! Keep 'em crossed though, I don't have the car back yet.
The guys are very confident that they'll get it done tomorrow. In fact they seemed confident that the mechanical part would be done today and tomorrow would be used for the tune. I think I saw at least 10 mustangs there either completed, in the build process or some other state. The Miata on the rack in the last pic has a 348 small block ford in it !!!!
I have some more pics and I'll post up later tonight, after work.
