Talked to Bill via text; this is no prank

No details though. That's for Bill to share with us.
F**k.

Maybe it's me, but if my car died I'm not so sure I'd be real eager to talk about it right away after I spent oodles of money on it. It's very tempting to call Bill, but let's give him a bit of breathing room, time for a couple of beers to unwind. He'll tell us what's up.

<edit>
Anyone else hitting refresh several times a minute to see if someone added something ??
</edit>

Good google Leo. I was curious to know what is done.
I'm hoping the problem is what Brian said a few posts ago. Looks like I'll have to go to sleep not knowing. See you guys tomorrow.

Good luck Bill whatever the problem is.

+1 on hitting refresh every couple of minutes. I'm trying to distract myself to not be so eager

I just realized that I never received any kind of confirmation for the Knott's show. Should I panic and try to contact someone? I don't even have any email or phone contact numbers!

Yes a little breathing room is good, follow by some brews! Sorry to hear about the TR Bill, let me know if you need any help, once you figure out the issue(s). I'm sure you'll give us the low down @ R & R's. It's Fab FORDS or bust!

Well here we are, its early morning and the suspense continues.........................

All the SoCal guys are asleep still (late night mongers) and thee rest of the world is awakening to the silence.

Maybe we should start a pool as to what the actual situation is?

Maybe the GQ is Dead because Bill was thrashing it with his new found FI power and the local law enforcement caught up with him and gave the GQ a ride to impound, thus the It's Dead

I mean we could theorize about this all day, it will be nice to hear the real word.

Oh Hi guys I'm back, been off a few days, well maybe over a week, been a bit under the weather which is a shame now that I'm one of those fully retired kind of guys now ha. Its interesting to find things to fill my day lately but getting an audit notice from the IRS for 2006 income tax sure woke me up Yikes that got me real busy. Sold some stock options and they got me for full value instead of the diff of what they cost me to buy. I called and the IRS and got a really cool lady that was totally nice and took care of me over the phone and closed my case no additional action on my part, Dodging a bullet I suppose. I know I was sweating bullets thats for sure.

OK back to the Taco drama.. Tick.......Toc.....Tick.....Toc....Tick....Toc.... .Tick....Toc

Im hoping is just a fuel delivery problem...there's nothing worse than seeing your car go up on a tow truck, because it wont go anywhere itself, trust me.

Well... At least there is some good news.

Come on Bill, it's killing us.

He's probably in invisible mode right now...

No, I'm not in jail, but I'd rather be and have a in-tact car... and the story would be more exciting.

Here's what I know so far...

1st test drive (by Hector) was as expected, gobs of power, pulled at ~2500+ rpm's, all sounded great.

2nd and final test drive (by Hector), going up a small hill, ~2500 rpm's, mis-shift from 2nd to 5th, engine bogged (of course), pushed clutch in and found 3rd, then a clicking/tapping noise was heard in the cabin. Limped it back to his garage for further evaluation.
This is when I arrived at scene... He told me what happened, I recorded under the trans/bell housing, then around the engine bay. As you'll hear, the knocking sound is much louder near the bell housing.

Trans/bell housing vid: http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v6...t=MVI_9906.flv

Engine bay vid: http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v6...t=MVI_9907.flv

It was then decided by me to take it out for a spin to see if there was any clutch engagement issues (from the knocking sound I heard).
TC off, I cruised on the street (light to med throttle). As engine rpm's rose, so did the knocking sound. As I let off on the throttle, the knocking sound would go away. But under forward acceleration load, the knocking would come back.
I brought the rpm's up to ~4000-4500 at ~75% throttle and all hell broke loose. That knocking turned into a fast rattle and engine load seemed to 'free up', similiar to breaking a timing belt.
Immediately, I pressed in the clutch and coasted to the side of the road, and that's where you saw the tow truck pic.

I popped open the hood, and saw some smoke coming out from the K&N air filter. I thought that was wierd...

Stang is currently at Kevin's house (after a $126 tow!... AAA only covers 7 miles and $9 per mile thereafter) awaiting further evaluation.

I can only hope at this point that I fractured the flywheel/clutch assembly. If anything went in the engine, I'm F'd.

Like Brian noted, no fluid leaks, no metal particles in the oil dip stick, coolant from overflow tank looked fine. No damage to oil pan or any surrounding areas under the car. All looks fine.

Pics taken just before my last test drive..

I'm speechless. Don't know what it could be or what to say.

Sorry that this happened to your car. I wish I could do something to help.

+1
If there is anything I could do to help, just say the word.

Is there a inspection cover or any way to look at the pressure plate/clutch area? I think dropping the tranny shouldn't be too hard.

Look at the bright side...If it is the clutch, It would be a perfect time to upgrade

You can.. pray that it's the flywheel/clutch that failed and not the engine.
That engine as it sits is way too sick looking to start tearing apart.

Forgot to mention in my post, that at the time things went south, oil pressure on the dash gauge was up, temp in middle like always, fuel pressure in pod gauge read ~30+ psi, A/F meter was in the green band (rich), and no MIL lights in dash.

Other useless pics and vids...

Thanks guys. Maybe buying me a drink on Sunday will cheer me up some.

My plan from today to Saturday..
  • Pull all the plugs for inspection. Anything other than a clean buring plug, I'm toast.
  • If plugs are good, pull the starter and examine the flywheel for debris, damage, looseness, out of round/balance while turning the crank by hand, etc.
  • If the flywheel/clutch is what failed, start shopping for some cool stuff.
  • Drop the mid-pipes, drop DS, disconnect all electrical off trans in prep for the removal.
Of course, if something is found in step 1, I'll have to make some serious decisions.
