a) he was the devil himself when pissed off so you quickly learned not to set him off
b) education and law of the land that guns were never pointed at people or anything else you didn't want to kill because of the chance it could go off. Including toy guns.
c) started hunting trips when I was about 10. He had this Mossberg .22 target rifle - with the big heavy stock and forearm. Way heavy. So I got to carry it the first summer empty. Then the next summer he said 'anytime I turn around and see you not pointing the barrel in the air or at the ground means you have to carry it one more trip empty'. So I quickly learned to ALWAYS point the gun in a safe direction and away from people.
So today, when I see kids pointing toy guns at another kid - or me - I want to beat them until they bruise! Kids today think they're toys and then they want to play gang banger. Why? TV & movies, not enough men teaching them safe gun handling, not enough men taking kids out hunting and fishing, too many single mom households where men are excluded, a generation of wimpy azz men.

Grew up with woods and a swamp in my back yard. Hunting and fishing my whole childhood. Times have changed. Just glad grandpas can take my boys. Really hoping one day I can start bringing them fishing at least. Not much on hunting. Got into race gunning comp shooting for a while. Would love to bring them to the range in a few more years.

My son is 6, already started teaching the basics o gun safety, much in the same way Charlie described. I grew up in the woods and on te river as well as summers on my grandparents farm working the fields with them. I think it's fundamental parts f life that everyone should experience.
