Camber Kit or Not?
Camber Kit or Not?
I have a shop recommending a toe and camber kit be installed on my 2004 3.9 as they say normal wear and tear is not allowing them to align the car back to factory spec. Now, the alignment printout show the car is within parameters, just not as fine tuned as it could be.
My question is how much this is really needed. I mean, I drive the car and its fine...handles great etc but I'm more concerned with the fact I will be putting $600 in new rubber on and I don't want uneven wear. I'm assuming that even I did have it done (no biggle at $60 installed) it can't hurt correct?
Thanks in advance

I say it can't hurt at all. Are they just talking camber bolts or something else. Camber bolts are about 30 bucks and take about 2 minutes to install if the car is on the lift already. can they tell you what is wore out that it can't be aligned properly. you say its within specs so I wonder if they are just trying to make a few more bucks off of you??
Who did the work?
Who did the work?
Pep Boys...only there to have my Tire Rack tires installed.
Its a kit like this

I'm wondering to. Thanks for your insights as always.

Was there alot of uneven wear on your old tires, mainly on the inside? And like Glenn said, what is worn out and why would they not recommend you fix that? Is the car lowered?
My guess is they don't know Mustangs have some negative camber for cornering performance, ran into alot of shops like that.

They're exact words were that "these cars experience normal wear that won't allow us to align to normal spec. There isn't anything worn yet but the kit allows factory spec adjustment". There WAS some uneven inner wear on the inside of the right front, but I chalked that up to me not having the tires re balanced and not keeping up on alignments (which need done every 12,000 miles with the roads in this lovely region). As it was, I'm getting 40,000 out of my Exclaims...would have gotten probably 50,000 plus but the **** left sides wear down a lot faster that rights and these are directional treads
Without more information, sounds like the shop is full of crap. What alignment parameter are they saying is responsible for the abnormal tire wear? Caster? Camber? Toe? Which of those parameters will their alignment kit correct? Toe is adjustable via the tie rods. As I recall from aligning my '01 Mustang, caster and camber can be adjusted to a small degree by drilling out the rivets in the top strut mounts. If more camber is needed, camber/crash bolts can be installed (I used them to get more negative camber for autocrossing).
Without the actual alignment numbers for where your car sits now and what the ideal numbers are the shop is trying for, and what parts they think are worn, nobody here can help you much without just guessing.
