Hello everybody, I got my Mustang about 9 months ago and everything has been pretty good overall. It’s a 2014 GT California Special with around 78,500 miles (bought it at 72,500) and with little to no work done. The previous owner had it straight-piped and I believe also swapped to 3.73 gearing.
When I first got the car, I immediately had to take it to a shop to replace the rear brake pads and rotors. I also had to replace the upper differential bushing and the upper suspension arm. After those repairs, the car drove perfectly for a couple of months.
However, about 3 months ago, I started to hear a rubbing sound when turning while driving. It wasn’t very loud or constant, and it only happened when I was moving and turning, so I wasn’t too concerned at first. But it’s progressively gotten worse—still not constant, but definitely more noticeable. I thought it might be a suspension issue, so I took it to a shop to get it checked out. They told me there was nothing wrong with the suspension and said they couldn’t replicate the sound during their test drives.
That same day, on my drive home, I immediately heard the sound again once the car had been driven for a bit. I’ve been ignoring it ever since, but it’s getting frustrating. Just this past weekend, I also replaced the front rotors, pads, and calipers since it was due.
I figured I’d make a post on the forum since I haven’t been able to find anything about this specific issue. Any help or input would be much appreciated. Thanks!
It Could Be a Lot of Things Including How Well The Gear Change Was Done as it is Hard To Find Somebody Who Can Properly Set up a Diff. But Anyhoo off the Top of My Head Since The Issue is a Rubbing Sound When Turning. If it is Coming From The Rear and You Have a Clutch Type Differential it Could Simply Need a Bottle of Hypoid Additive. Here is a Link to a Related Issue on The 05's Which are Similar.
Sorry I too do not have any suggestions as to the source. So is it like a metal rubbing on metal sound? Is it coming from the front of the car or the rear? Left or Right?
Looks like the car is OEM height (not lowered) and tires appear to be standard OEM size so tire rubbing does not look like a problem.
Just wondering could it be the vacuum sounds from the Heat/AC unit?
Give us as much detail as you can. Maybe a recording/video if you if possible, but don't risk a crash.
I too would like to welcome you to TMS from another 2014 Owner. Nice looking... Love to see more pictures,

The sound is a bit hard to describe — it's somewhat like a rubbery or whining noise, but still very sharp. It definitely sounds rotational, as if it's coming from something that’s spinning. I believe the sound is coming from the front of the car, and it only occurs when I turn left or right.
You’re correct — both the tires and ride height are OEM.
I don’t think it’s related to the heat or AC, since the sound is clearly coming from underneath the car and is much too loud for it to be something like that.
I’m currently trying to borrow a GoPro from a friend so I can get a clear recording of the sound from underneath the vehicle.
As for photos, I don’t usually take any of my car, but I’ll snap a few so I can share them with you.
