I think older houses are built better. At least around here they are. My parents bought theirs which was built in 1970 and really have had very few problems. A small leak in the basement that we fixed ourselves but thats about it. My in laws have a house that was built in 1995. It already needs a ton of work. The walls are weak. The paint needs redone in the kitchen and whole upstairs. It isn't solid at all, you can knock lightly on a wall and hear it all the way at the other end of the house.

Before my parents bought the house that they currently live in (1970) they had one that was built in the 1910's. Huge and solid as a rock!!

recently they built new houses a few blocks behind my parents ($400k at least) Six months later there were problems with them because the foundations were cracking, yes cracking! My dad knew a few people on the commision board and the rumor was that they were built too fast and the construction company didn't let the foundation settle long enough. Oops!!

I am thinking we need to buy a house in a different state, rent it out, and then refinance every couple years just to get some cash. Owning a home makes us a better credit risk too... Still thinking on that.
I read somewhere that that is exactly what a lot of younger couples are doing in areas that have very high home prices (NY, CA, Mass). People who move to Boston, NYC, and such are buying homes in their home state and renting them out, hoping to either move back someday or earn enough that they can eventually purchase a home where they work. If I were going to do such a thing, I'd think Florida, Arizona, North Carolina and Vegas area. Booming areas that are bound to increase in value.

They want us to take a peek. This is literally 4 miles out of the school district. This town used to be a one redlight redneck town, but its the fastest growing city in Alabama now- things are allegedly happening out there. THE place to live- apparently you buy low out there and roost, and the markets gonna skyrocket.
[/b]

The kids will probably be the fastest ones to adjust to the move, I don't think moving once or twice is as hard on kids as its made out to be... now if the moving was constant - like military moving - then perhaps.

Make sure the schools have adequate space and/or plans to expand soon and have enough funding. The city I went to school in went through a real growth spurt. The grades 2 below mine and below never had enough room, there were classes being held in hallways for a few years until they finished the new junior high.

[here's the part where I note how stupid governments are = they finished the school on time and UNDER budget, instead of giving back the money or at least saving it, they put in expensive woodwork for the kids to scratch their names and bad words into :bang: ]

A realtor was putting a FOR SALE sign up in the yard of one of the houses on my list............4 bed, 3 bath Fenced yard, you name it- the whole 9 yards
$139,000
[/quote]

well hope you get to look at it and it doesn't need repairs and you can get it. Hope it has an office for you, does the house you looked at have space for an office, or the two voted for?

We picked black appliances. Too dark. We wished we had chosen the aluminum finish instead.

The mistake I made was the black and white checkered tile and white cabinets.....White is such a PITA to keep clean.

Some housing markets I simply do not get.

I was looking into moving to Long Island last year- until I saw the little shacks going for a half mill :notnice:

Now I can understand why my dream castle in Destin Florida is high dollar- its on the gulf of Mexico......

Some other things- I don't get. NY and CT housing are just a few of em.My father in laws 30 year old house on one acre in Bayport NY will sell for 3.4 mill if he ever decided to.

The house I am looking at is 1,700 SF, 2 car garage, 2 story on a garden lot Brick and Vinyl. $167,000. I am paying about 20k extra for the address.

Should I stay here- 3 bed 3 bath split level 2 car garage $139,000. NUMEROUS houses in this development for sale.

These places are 10 minutes apart- but the new one is in the fastest growing town in alabama. Everyone is leaving here to go there.
