Yes, they are alike... both use a point system to buy games from their "stores"
But Nintendo will have better games to buy
The cost of buying the games will range from $5 (8-bit games), $8 (16-bit games), and $10 (64-bit games)
How much are the games on the Xbox Arcade?
But Nintendo will have better games to buy

NES - starting at $5

N64 - starting at $10
TurboGrafx 16 - $6

Unfortunately we miss out on some games in the US, Japan gets alot more VC titles. Including NES Super Mario Bros, and Europe gets Donkey Kong Country.
Nintendo has some neat opportunities with the VC, promotions with new games for instance. Pre-Order Super Mario Galaxy and get Super Mario Bros free on the VC, just as an example. I doubt they'd do that, because SMB1 and SMB3 are guaranteed hot sellers, I've never met anyone that didn't like at least one of those two games. I just hope they offer the Japanese Super Mario Bros 2, I would buy that in a second.
I'm guessing they won't make any money off of people who know what emulators are

However, the Virtual Console WOULD make money if the games were also altered/updated/new
Think about it.
With emulators... anyone deep into that realm knows there are 'hacks' for games. It wouldn't take Nintendo much to utilize old engines and crank out an updated game with new levels much development time...really..
Think about it...having a Super Mario Bros 1.5
or a completely new Super Mario side scroller.
THAT is the part that interests me about the VC the most. Not just the old...but the new

Fair enough, but I think you and I both know that's not who Nintendo is targetting with this. I can't tell you the number of gamers that I've talked to that were psyched because the old Super Mario Bros games were going to be available and that would let them get their girlfriend/wife into it. I mean my mom could play Super Mario Bros and have fun, and she asks for help on the computer if it involves more than playing a card game or checking her email. For people that know what MAME or snes9x are, I imagine Nintendo more or less wrote them off from the start. However, I might actually buy off the VC just for the convenience of it. I'm not sure about updating/modding games. I think they might be gunning for a simple "it works, sell it" methodology. Personally, I'm kinda interested in the TurboGrafx 16, I never even knew someone who owned one as a kid.
The exact pricing is
NES - starting at $5
SNES - starting at $8
N64 - starting at $10
TurboGrafx 16 - $6
Sega Genesis - $8
