I think that it would at best make you the better "man" in this situation. If he tells you he is OK, then go ahead and ask her out. If he is not sure how he would feel, explain to him that you and her are just 'friends' now, and not even sure it anything more will develop.
And people hijack threads no matter what the mods say... some people can't help it.

Fishing is more fun when you just cast your bait out there and let it sit. If you don't like what you catch you can always throw it back. Just don't cast too many times. Your arm will get tired and you'll end up doing more work than its worth. If the fishes want to bite at your hook, let em. You'll have plenty of time to be "sittin' on the dock of the bay watchin the tides roll away"
