$399 is the iPad 2, same resolution as iPad mini, but with the screen bigger, it's more pixelated. The iPad mini does have slightly better internals though, not that that will matter much with her usage. Really you'd be fine with either one. Personally, if the iPad mini had the high res display, I would've traded in my 3rd gen iPad for it. I like the smaller size.
What about the Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9 for $299 has wi-fi 16gb, screen resolution is 1920x1200. Bigger screen and less than the Mini. Bestbuy has them so you could do a side by side comparison. Lots of options for tablets, the MS Surface look intriguing but on the pricey side at 500.

Anybody had any experience with one of these. Might be my Christmas present to myself.

In short, I have no experience with one of those. If you do end up buying it, make sure to post your thoughts on it.

I researched a lot of tablets and went for the Asus Transformer Infinity. A bit pricey, but the specs on it were pretty good.
WAP???
I have a question, the cable guy just left after being here for 2 hours and my hubby's xbox still isn't getting the wifi he needs to stay signed in. Usually I would be happy about this, but he is being a whiny ***** and when he comes home tonight I don't want to have to tell him that the cable guy couldn't help us.
The cable guy suggested running a Ethernet cord from the router to the other end of the house to the xbox. I'm not crazy about drilling another hole in the floor. I was reading on a Wireless Access Point, idk if that would work, we must have concrete walls or some ****. What do y'all think?? I'd like to give him a option when he comes in from work. Please help!!!!

you could try a more powerful router.
I kept getting kicked off my old router at the folks' place, so I bought a router with a larger range and 2 channels. Not too many problems anymore.

And I'm just looking at it from a perspective like my parents would have, they'd want one bigger.
