Differences In Generations and Work Ethics or Lack Thereof?

I was reading up on a few articles this evening pertaining to the different generations and what is happening with them in the job-market right now. After a few posts back and forth pertaining to unions with Charlie (a big whole-hearted thanks sir for your input) it really got me thinking about people's performance and work ethic and how it pertains to differing generations. Here is a brief rundown of what I mean:

Baby Boomers: Extremely hardworking and motivated by position, perks and prestige, confident, independent and self-reliant.

Generation X: Independent, resourceful and self-sufficient, values freedom and responsibility. Many in this generation display a casual disdain for authority and structured work hours. They dislike being micro-managed and embrace a hands-off management philosophy.

Generation Y: Confident, ambitious and achievement-oriented. Have high expectations of their employers, seek out new challenges and are not afraid to question authority, craves feedback in the forms of feedback and guidance. They appreciate being kept in the loop and seek frequent praise and reassurance.

I like to take advice from the Baby Boomers who are successful and willing to lend advice on how they achieved their successes. I also listen to the gossip of the gen y for entertainment and always keep an overall independent mindset.

I'm interested to hear from you regarding what your opinions are on the different generations and their work ethic or lack thereof.

Painting with broad strokes, I'd say thats a pretty good picture of each generation.

As a gen-x guy, I can agree with the dislike of micro-management, my former boss was notorious for that. The guy could turn opening a door into a 20 step process that made you feel like you dropped out of remedial breathing school. At the same time when I was a manager, I drove my boss crazy by not being a micro-manager.

I'm the last of the Gen-X to some but the first of Gen-Y to others. I drive for things to do constantly and get bored with the mundane of the nine-five. Give me boiler-pressure tasks to conquer that are never-ending, tell me what you expect, and then get out of my way as I pour on the hard work and try to beat the bar you've set before me. I'm definitely an independent worker but have got to stay constantly busy and I'm no socialite. I'd rather work and make great money than chase after the next party or putting etc. I think that's more Gen-X?
