Tall and skinny tires the next big thing?

Pirelli is predicting a move toward tall, skinny automobile wheel and tire combinations in the coming years, particularly for smaller cars, that look like a modern take on those used at the dawn of motoring.
The Italian tire company tells GoAuto that upcoming fuel economy, noise and wet weather traction requirements, driven by the European Union, are behind the development.
The new design aims to keep the same overall size footprint on the road by changing its shape to long and narrow rather than short and fat, in relation to the direction of travel.

Those will make driving even more better . Love the progress. hmm can we dull the car any more, not enough we have lack of feel electric steering, low rolling resistance tires that are numb and nanny devices on cars. rant off

Indeed. On our cars, they're silly, but if you incorporated the idea in a newly designed econo-hybrid, then it would be THE thing to do. The smaller frontal area presented in the direction of travel reduces friction, but the larger circle produces a longer footprint on the road for similar stability for *normal* driving. Cornering? Yeah... we'll get back to you on that... Especially in the wet.
And as they incorporate the idea, we'll wind up with very strangly shaped cars I think, with F1 type suspensions... re-imagine the Prowler.
Very smart idea for the right application. Kinda doubt it'll take hold though. Only so much self-fart-appreciation before it becomes really stupid.
/Who gets the reference? Hm?
