Can I make a comparison that some people may see as crazy? It's a comparison that you have to 'get' to understand... so this may only be preaching to the choir... Comparison: Jeep Wrangler.

Jeeps suck, but they've got a cult-like following and people love them. I've got a Jeep and I don't recommend them to anyone. People have said to me "I'm thinking of getting a Jeep, do you like yours?" My response: Well, they're horrible on gas, they're noisy, they're slow, they have no storage room, they don't handle well, and they ride like crap. "Oh, so you don't like it?" Nope, I love it. This is my third one. You have to want a Jeep to like a Jeep. There's an expression: - It's a Jeep thing, you wouldn't understand. - I always thought that was just a catchy slogan until I owned a Jeep for a couple of years. The Jeep makes up for all of its faults w/ its personality.

I see the Fiat as something similar, but trading the off-road capability for gas mileage. It doesn't surprise me that the majority of people wouldn't like, or "understand", the Fiat.

I wish Jeeps had more power. I could never drive anything that slow.

Americans don't understand Fiat. And I really don't think that they want to. Fiesta(good little car) Fit(good little car) Mini(cool little car) Smart(dumb little car) Fiat(WTF?) that's how I see them.

I remember in the 70's when they slapped a 304 V8 in it. Dual glass packs outside each ragdoor. They were pretty fast (and dangerous).

As for Fiat, what's to get about fugly?

No way man. Coonasses don't go 4WD. Got it confused with hicks. No compensation needed over here.

believe it or not, almost all of the people that have gone up to my wife or i to ask about the fiat are older gentleman (40-55) and they always end by saying "great/beautiful/nice/gotta get me one" little car.

Of course. It's just like their golf cart. They may just make them legal on the courses.

My wife and I were very seriously considering one of these until I had the chance to sit in one and determined that it really just isn't big enough for me to get comfortable in. That said, it is a very neat little ride and, if you fit, I would recommend it. Without doubt it beats the Honda Fit.

You need a "meh, it's interesting but not my thing" option.

All this talk about the fiat 500 having "personality" reminds me of how when someone tries to hook you up with their ugly friend and the first thing they say is "she's got a great personality"... lol we all know what that means.
