Get a third key?
Get a third key?
I want to get a third spare key for my sister in case she needs to drive it. I want to know how much usually the spare key cost and how long does it take to order one from the dealership.
EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE A 3RD KEY! AND IT SHOULD COME WITH THE CAR (but doesn't).
That way if you lose one, you still have two. It takes two to program another key. Without two you get to bend over at the dealer for a few hundred bucks.
I immediately get a 3rd key for all my cars now. Get a blank off ebay, go to a real locksmith (not Home Depot, etc.) that can cut the key without wrecking the transponder, then reprogram all 3 keys according to the Owners Manual.
Key Blank $13 (transponder - no remote), locksmith $10 for my Chrysler winter car.
My Ford key blank was higher ($28 + $10 locksmith) because I got the complete key with an extra remote too.
My girlfriends Jeep key that I melted on the wood stove? $190 cause the Dealer had to program it since she only had 1 left.

You have to follow the steps and insert both keys within a set time frame before it goes into 'program mode' where it then resets all 3 to the same frequency.
I can vouch for 99 Jeep, 08 Mustang, 08 & 10 Chrysler PT all the same.
That being said...
I don't have them for any of my current cars.

I used to do this 1st thing.
I probably haven't gotten to it now because I've never lost a key in decades.

However, I do always carry a spare door key in case I lock the keys in the car.

The door keys are a buck each, cut.
True advice guys. As some of you know, you can go to a local hardware store with one of your keys and they will cut a "door key", just a plain flat key, which will open the door. I keep mine in my wallet. This would allow you to put one of your expensive keys in a key box, and put it someplace under your hood. As you know, you have to open the door, pull the hood release, to pop the hood. Ford dealership said this door key would set off the alarm. I have a 2013 GT and the dealership is wrong. Also good news here: My local hardware store can make an electronic key, similar to your original key, and program it right there using only one of your keys as a master. Cost me $75 for a third key. No buttons on the key, all it does is start the car and get you home. Ask around.
Hi guy its depends on what you have ,i was able to get a spare key cut ar the hardware store cost about 5.00 . or check with the dealer on a key only or with the door entry fob .,.
