This seems a huge gamble at the moment, but they have probably looked at GM and realised they need to do something sooner rather than later.

DaimlerChrysler commits $40bn to US operations
DaimlerChrysler AG will spend $40 billion over the next five years to introduce new models and reinvest in its North American plants, CEO Juergen Schrempp announced on 6 June in the US.

Schrempp told Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm, congressional staff and lobbyists that DaimlerChrysler maintains 37 factories in 13 states, pays 100,000 employees about $8 billion in annual wages and spends $36 billion on US-produced components.

True. I read today that GM posted almost a billion dollar loss for the quarter and plan to cut 25,000 jobs over the next couple of years. Anayysts say that GM has too many brands. Gee, maybe they've been reading the posts on this forum!
