So I'm missing the point of this thread. If we are going by styling, the 50's and 60's were both fantastic in their own way. Today's cars are dog**** fugly in comparison. On the same token, today's cars cannot be beat, safety, economical, emissions, power, performance, etc, etc. But they have no soul like the classics.
Exception: Ferrari blew their wad with the F50. The greatest car ever built. IMO.

I'd say its not just looks but a combination of elements that impart that characteristic.
I grew up with the fox cars, I'd say they have plenty of character and soul, especially when you run a fox car with a set of 2-chamber flows and an off-road pipe!
Frankly, as long as a car can illicit the sort of enthusiam that is exhibited on boards like this or Camaro 5 or whatever these cars have that intangible element.
From my own perspective I can tell you that cars from the 20's, 30's, 40's or 50's do little for me - about the only car I like prior to 60's is a '55 Bel-Air, just about eveything else raises my pulse about as much as watching grass grow.

I don't know Al, there are plenty of cars today with soul, they may not possess the overt styling of cars like the F50 but they are out there.

Now as far as the Fox, really? Like a cigar box with a hatchback. Yes I love the fox bodies but its not because they have character. I love the notchback most of all because it is a total sleeper. Similar to a big block Nova but even less styling. The fox performed great, sounded fantastic, and looked less than impressive. I really want another notch but its not because its a beautiful car. Lol
And for the record. This 56 Vic I saw this weekend made me remember how great Ford was back in the day.

I consider the one on the right (6C 2500 Bertone from the 1940s) the most beautiful car ever built.
