Remembering Swede Savage! I was so close I could feel the heat from the fire ball! I've seen a lot of tragic crashes at Indy over the years, this one has always stuck in my mind! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLUbD...eature=related
My Indy connection, Larry was a personal friend of my Father. Larry fudged about my age so I could work in his 1976 pit crew!.. Great times man!!

Yea I thought I needed to come up with a name for the car. Wife and me started looking at it and she noticed I had dice on the valve stem and door locks and we started playing around with names about gambling. I also got bored this winter and made these in my work shop

I set in the rain that year, we didn't go back when they finally ran the race. There was a lot of wrecks in that race. Wasn't that also, the year of the big one at the start with Salt Walther's (another rich kid that wanted to go racing) feet sticking out of the car as it spun down the main straight. Hard to believe that Savage lived through the impact, only to be left to burn in the pile of wreckage. I remember seeing him fight to get out of the car. Those cars back then carried upwards of 40 gallans of fuel in them. Seemed like if there was a fire back then the driver was almost always killed. I think they called it flame inhalation. The most vivid memory of that kind I have it Art Pollard's wreck in practice before Saturday Qualifications.
