I took my Stang in for the oil change yesterday, I went with the FoMoCo 5-20 blend. I had a long talk with the Service Manager, I have been dealing with him for 15 years, so i know he would not BS me. He told me the problem with the mod motors is, there is a teflon coating on the pistons. After X -amount of miles the coating wears off and you get the start up noise. And Ford are NOT replacing the motors. But when it gets to loud, i'm going to give back to them untill they fix it.

Fritz your oil is not getting thicker after 3000 miles unless you have lots of contaminates. If you want information on viscosity please read this.

If you do choose to experiment please have your oil tested so you can see if it really is having any affect on your engine wear. Blackstone labs helped me identify a fuel contamination problem in my diesel truck before it became a major issue.
You can also get information from an oil analysis to confirm what your Service Tech is telling you. The Blackstone report would identify what chemical elements are showing up at above average levels for your car.
