Sorry if this has been asked before but I couldn't find it anywhere in the forum. Why is the 2005 Mustang refered to as the S197?

 

when i asked that question, i was told that every concept has a "code" or something like it. And the 2005 Mustang was called the S197

 

Adrenalin... the mustang you drive is known as the SN95. Simply put, it's pretty much the factory technical name for '94-'04 Mustangs. It refers to a certain incarnation of Mustangs. S197 refers to all '05+ Mustangs until another major redesign occurs.

Think of it scientifically. Gluteus Maximus pretty much just means butt to normal people, but to doctors, etc., it is a latin technical term for the muscle.

Or, Wileyus e coyoteus... which we know as Wile E. Coyote.

 

I think Dr. Iven's got it right! muscle! S197 is known internally [Ford Engineers] as the serial #, or code for the new 05 stang. But check this out! The letter "S" is the 19th letter in the alphabet; and 7 is a lucky #, hence S197. Think their trying to tell us something? Maybe the 05 is going to be a winner! Sure is in my books! hehehehe!

that finally answers my question i wanted to know the whole S197 thing

 

S197 is the project name.

S = Sporty Car

SN = Sporty Car North America

Why they dropped the N I don't know.

197 = sequential project # Has nothing to do with the Job 1 date. Many projects never see the light of day.

You may also hear the name "D2C" that is the code name for the platform the Mustang is built on. There may be other FoMoCo products built off of the D2C platform, S197 is the first D2C based product.
