Does anyone else hear a "whirr whirr whirr" sound when driving around at low speed in 1st or 2nd gear? For example 1500-2000 RPM in 1st gear or 2nd gear and letting off the throttle in a parking lot while going straight.
I can hear a slight WHIRR WHIRR WHIRR sound with the windows down. It sounds like it is coming from the engine or gearbox.

 

It's sounds like it may be the synchronizers...which is normal. It was very noticeable on my SN95, but it usually only occured in first gear, and I don't think I ever noticed it in second gear.

I haven't noticed it on my S197, but it could be there

Can anyone else chime in and verify.

 

These (most all) transmissions have helical gears. You are hearing the noise of the gears meshing. Straight cut gears (like reverse or many racing gearboxes) are even noiser.

I don't know about a whirr whirr sound--I have an automatic, but when I hit the gas hard (for example accelerating onto a highway) I get a sound that sounds almost like the CD player is changing discs. I drove without a radio for a week, and still got that sound. Is it a sound like that? If so, what could it be?

 

The best replication of this sound is to use the Ferrari 550 Maranello in GTR2 (PC racing sim, not PSx crap) and go WOT in 1st gear up to 7500 RPM and let off the gas: WHIRR WHIRR WHIRR WHIRR WHIRR.....

That's basically the same sound I hear when I'm cruising through a parking lot at sub-2k RPM in 1st or 2nd gear w/ the TR-3650.

 

Well 1/2 whines big time when coasting in the 3650, they make a lot of racket. Throwout bearing also makes a lot of noise with the clutch out. When you're sitting in place you can hear it, put it in neutral, let out the clutch and whirr whirr whirr. In a parking lot a lot of sounds get reflected off other cars(or in a McD's drive-through) making it sound even louder. I like all the chunkiness and noise of the Mustang, reminds me of my 60's cars. If it gets on my nerves at times, the simple solution is Green Day very loud.

 

More likely what you are hearing is the transmission. When in neutral, the input shaft is spinning. Engaged to it full time is the cluster gear and the free spinning intermediate gears (1st, 2nd, 33rd, and 5th) on the output shaft. Its only when you engage one of these these you are in a gear and if the car is not moving, the input shaft and everything else stop moving. When it get to the point you are really hearing the TO bearing, its time for it to be changed.

 

Well I have had 3 stangs with the 3650 and they all sound the same(not to mention having driven thousands of other ones).

 

Mine 3650 whirrs loudly when the car is in neutral with no clutch engaged.

As soon as I depress the clutch and place the car in gear the whirr disappears.

I think it's something in the trans and not the throwout bearing since I don't hear the whirr when the car is in gear.

Dealer time?

 

My 3650 makes a continuous whirring sound when the clutch is engaged with the flywheel in neutral. I believe this is normal.

 

It is.

 

Its the transmission gears meshing. its normal. Nothing terminal is about to happen to your transmission.

 

For whats it worth, I had the same sound at low speeds "1st gear" either pulling into a parking spot or out at an angle. Took it in to have the clutch packs replaced. Sound gone!

I have an automatic and have a "whir" or whistle like sound only in second gear. It started with about 150 miles on the odometer.

Service deptartment (dealer) says if I am willing to remove the MAC axlebacks and put the stock exhaust on, they might hear it but right now, they don't hear a thing.

They had 4 techs drive it and they couldn't hear it. I went out with one of them and I could hear it with no problem. (rather remarkable since I worked in steel mills for 28 years and can't hear sh*t!)
